Home team A down by 7 in third quarter. A1 drives the lane. I am lead. B1 reaches across and gets all ball and knocks it away. A1 recovers ball and B2 hacks him across the arm. I call the foul on B2.
As I go to report it, coach A jumps up and screams "that wasn't the foul to call". I say, "OK then, no foul." "No, that's not what I meant", he says. "I meant you should have called the foul before that one." "But we did call the foul before that one, coach. If we hadn't, this would have been the first foul called in the entire game." "I meant right before this when their player reached in." "OH! You mean when he reached in and slapped the ball. I see. You want a foul called for hitting the ball. OK, we'll do that." I turn to my partner and say, "We had a foul for slapping the ball just before this. Since we are in the bonus, this is a correctable error for not awarding the ball a merited free throw. Wipe off the foul I just called, put the ball on the free throw line and start your ten second count." The coach asked what I was doing. I told him that since the ball got fouled, it would have to shoot itself. By this time, my partner was laughing so hard, he had to hold his stomach. The coach said, "I don't have a clue what you're talking about." I replied, "Coach, you're half right." I don't know if I could handle a ref talking to me that way, but I sure know if it was said to the other coach, my sides would still be sore from laughing so hard. Great story!
