Situation in boys high school varsity game A5 dunks during warmups we inform coach A that we are going to to start game with a T and he loses his coaching box privleges for the game. He is not happy but he knows the rule and he understands. We then inform coach B of the situation and he asks if anyone can shoot the T . We say yes. Starters are introduced and we're ready to go coach B then sends a player off the bench to shoot the T. Coach A goes ballistic yelling there should be a T on team B for an illegal subsitution . Coach B says that we told him anybody could shoot the free throws. After a lengthly conference we told the coaches that we misinformed coach B and a starter would have to shoot the free throws. We sent the sub back to the bench and started and finished the game with two very angry coaches. My question is in this situation does a starter have to shoot or can a player come off the bench to shoot .

3-2-2a says after 10 minutes before start time, a team is charged with a technical... for infractions of the following: a)Changing a designated starter, unless necessitated by illness, injury, illegal... or to attempt a technical free throw.

So I would say YES someone can come off the bench and shoot the T. However, per 3-3-4 the orignally designated starter could not reenter until the clock had been started/run.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

I believe that you are correct, Tony. The rule book seems perfectly clear to me. And you are also correct that the person who shoots the T cannot be substituted for until the clock has properly started and then at the first opportunity for a sub to be beckoned onto the floor.

The person who shoots the T can be subed for. You could have a different sub come in and shoot each free throw.
The players who came out however could not reenter until the clock had properly started and the next oppotunity to sub.

DownTownTony is right, PaulK1 is right, but firedoc is incorrect on his sub rule.
gj56, You had it right the first time you informed the coach. Too bad you got confused. You'll know for next time that ANYTIME a T is charged in a game, ANY team member of the opposing team may shoot the free throws unless he has been disqualified.

Slow down Nevada! Any eligible member of the opposing team may shoot the free throws. This means that if a player has left the game and no time has run off of the clock, he is not eligible to shoot the free throws. A small but very important difference to what you said.

NFHS:

Next question: once free throws have been shot, ball then put in bounds by Team "B" division line opposite and then when ball is handed to Player "B1", alternate possession arrow is then swithed to Team "A"? No jump ball.

Bigwhistle,
You are right! If A1 is subbed out and then a T is called before the clock starts, he may not re-enter and shoot, since he is not an eligible substitute at this time. Nice catch!
