According to the NFHS official's manual, the administering official that is resuming play shall blow the whistle in three instances. After a charged time-out, to start a quarter or half, and after a long delay. Knowing this, here's my question.
How many of you blow the whistle when we are resuming play with FTs after a time-out? The mechanic I use is step in, signal the number of throws, hit my whistle and then bounce the ball to the shooter. Do you guys follow this same routine or do you do something different? I'm looking forward to your responses.

If either team has not responded to the horn, we use our standard resuming play procedure. We would blow the whistle, count 2 seconds, blow the whistle again, and then bounce the ball to the FT shooter if the defense is notresponding or put it on the FT line if the offense is not responding.
But otherwise, no, we don't blow the whistle.

I blow the whistle, indicate the number of throws, then bounce the ball to the shooter. The manual says that we should blow the whistle there, and I really haven't come up with a good enough reason to ignore the manual. IMO, it doesn't hurt anything to give a quick blast, while possibly covering the whistle with a hand to muffle the sound (and keep from scaring the hell out of the players in the lane).

I don't blow the whistle before administering FTs. Watched a guy the other night that blew his whistle every single time he game the ball to a player -- after every violation, every foul, every stoppage. Wanted to walk out of the stands and steal his whistle.

I use the whistle for the purpose of getting the players' attention. If I've got everyone lined up where they want to be, I need no whistle to call attention to myself. During dead balls I blow as little as possible. I even like to try to beckon subs before the buzzer. ![]() mick |
