Well you have to work games. Work as many games as you can and use them to work on stuff. Even if you do not do all the mechanics, use that opportunity to see plays. Not sure what else you can do to build a schedule other than go to camps, but you can improve your game by seeing plays. The more plays you see the more second nature it is to make calls. Work on refereeing the defense and calling obvious violations consistently. This is a time I call my game and I do not care what my partner does. That is of course if your summer games are primarily laid back affairs with the purpose for the kids to play, not necessarily win.

Peace

Read through the rule book. Think up or remember unique/strange plays and find all the applicable rulings.

I agree. It's a great time to work on the two or three things (specific plays, mechanics, some "game management" (e.g., remembering the arrow, knowing the clock, knowing the TO status) that are at the top of your "improvement" list.

Get some of your game film and watch it. Break down the things you are doing and your floor positioning and your calls and mechanics. Be brutal on yourself and find things you need to improve on.

Get in (better) shape.

Pick up another sport (imo, it will help you get a better BK schedule)

Become the best game manager that you can be during the summer......

If you can work some AAU tournaments, it can help in many areas suggested above. It can also help you to get to know more people and perhaps work for assignors that may be able to use you during the upcoming season and beyond. It is not who you know, it is who knows you.

Some advice as someone who went through this a couple of summers ago in regards to being a new varsity official. I would just keep doing what you have been doing and take the advice of went everyone else has said in regards to reading the book and studying film.

The piece of advice I can give you is that if your assignor for summer basketball and AAU basketball is the same as your high school season, I would work as many games as possible. Try to keep your closed dates updated and also be honest with your assignor if you are being over worked. At times over the summer some officials will try to work every night of the week, and that is not good. It sends a message that you want to work a lot of games but you are overworking yourself.

I hope this advice helps you.

Peace,
JB
