When a team subs for the free thrower and the free throw is made, what are the proper mechanics. Do you blow the whistle and bring in the sub? Also do you then administer a spot throw-in as opposed to letting the team run the baseline? If so that seems to be a disadvantage to the throw in team. Thanks - I am new to this forum and to officiating and appreciate the help.

Yes and No. You would sound the whistle immediately after the last free throw if it is made and signal time out with an open raised hand. After the substitute is in, the team with the ball would be able to run the endline. They do not lose that privilege in this situation.

Also note that if the free throw is not made then play continues and the substitute would not be able to come in until the next available opportunity.

I agree with firedoc

vawils,
See? You've been doing this long enough to recognize fairness/unfairness, spirit and intent.
Yer on your way.

Thanks to Firedoc and Mick for the answers on my free throw substitution question. I agree with your answers and thought that was the right mechanic but my last game my partner was doing a spot throw in. I am in Virginia.
