It's Like Christmas Morning ...

The NFHS Basketball Rules Committee concluded their three day meeting today. What's in store for us for 2011-2012? How long until the press release comes out?

In past years, it's been early May. Though I do recall an April release one year.

I'm guessing there will be no major changes again.

I've seen tidbits on some of the things they're releasing soon. The committee was enthralled with the mechanics of that Crazy Ref guy they also downleaded from YouTube and so they're adopting his mechanics for throw in administration, blocking foul reporting, and closely guarded situations. Can't wait to get to camp to try these out myself.

By far, the "new" blocking mechanic is my favorite!!

It's also great practice for doing the limbo.

I thought that the new blocking mechanic will incorporate pounding the hands to the hips 3-4 times. Just like the NCAA ref's.

As reported earlier, I went to Hawks vs Wizards NBE game last weekend and saw some "bizzarro" signals from the refs - a hip check signal, the hopping on one foot several times while hitting the thigh to show a trip, one that the official looked like a jumping banana (to show the coach the player was pushed while in the air - at least that was the play), and the old "two-handed shutting the door" signal to demonstrate a push to the players side. Unorthodox, but quite entertaining (at least to me)!

The NBA is not stringent with its signals like NFHS is and allows its officials to better describe (IMO) what happened on a foul call. Of course that doesn't mean some officials don't have better mechanics than others.

Years ago, at a Jailblazer game, I saw Jake O'Donnell indicate a foul against a GS Warrior (don't remember who) for accidentally kneeing one of the Blazers in the groin.

Jake raised his knee, pushed it forward and grimaced. The whole place cracked up.

You can bet no one questioned that foul!

Yep. I'll use the "official" signals at the table, but I'll add extra if the coach questions the call (wants to know "what did s/he do").
