Spartans, Tar Heels Commit to Carrier Game

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Sports Commission has confirmed that Michigan State and North Carolina will play in the Carrier Classic on Veterans Day, the first NCAA basketball game to be played aboard an aircraft carrier.
Who knows... maybe the carrier will be in the Pacific...

Mark Padgett Wed Apr 13, 2011 03:21pm

For you newbies, what JR is referring to is an old post of mine about a rule interp. It goes like this. If a game was being played on the deck of an aircraft carrier in the Pacific ocean and a team had the ball in their backcourt when the ship crossed the international date line and it was now yesterday, would they then have 24 hours and 10 seconds to get the ball into frontcourt?

That's some memory you have, JR. :)

bainsey Wed Apr 13, 2011 03:37pm

Conversely, if the ship crossed the IDL westward, would the game be over, and would the players have broken curfew?

Mark Padgett Wed Apr 13, 2011 03:47pm

Wait a minute. If they're going to be in international waters, will they have to play by FEEBLE rules?

Last time I saw a basketball game played on an aircraft carrier, the Harlem Globetrotters beat the Washington Generals, and if I recall correctly, Louis Herman "Red" Klotz was still playing for the Generals. I think that the game was broadcast on ABC's Wide World of Sports, back in the 1960's.

When I saw this thread on the front page, I was wondering if the Fed had ruled that overtime is no longer played. :D

Does it have anything to do with unfurling a "Mission Accomplished" banner?

Yeah, it was the early 60s and they wanted veteran officials. :p

JugglingReferee Fri Nov 11, 2011 07:03pm

This game is being televised tonight - and right now, on ESPN.

North Carolina & Michigan State have Camo Unis, why couldn't the officials??

Mark Padgett Sat Nov 12, 2011 12:26pm

Watched the game yesterday. The teams wore uniforms with modified camo designs. It was really cool and it seemed the military on the ship really enjoyed it. That was the point.

UCONN plays on the carrier next year. That may be the highlight of their 2012-13 season, since they may not be academically eligible for any post season play next year. How embarrassing.

Obviously, they were doing it to honor the veterans. Good for them.

Coincidence, or done on purpose? Either way, I agree with grunewar, it was still pretty cool.

A few years ago I officiated for the Under 18 Irish National Team, who, in split squad games, played against a top-notch area AAU team, and a team of St. Joseph College alumni. All the officials at the site were Irish American, as was our assignment commissioner. One of the players was from County Monaghan, where my great grandfather was born.

With all the thought that went into setting the game up ON a Carrier, ON Veteran's day, WITH the Commander in Chief present, there is no way it was a coincidence.

BktBallRef Sun Nov 13, 2011 03:35pm

Everything that was done had a purpose. Even the UNC staff got into it, wearing military cargo pants and combat boots. The Michigan State AD is to be congratulated on such a great idea.

And North Carolina now owns six straight of Sparty. GO HEELS!

I thought that was extremely cool. Considering in these events they think of the officials last, I am glad that was something they tried to make happen.

Peace

The announcers mentioned that the crew was assigned specifically because they are :Dmilitary:D veterans.
