MS Faculty Fund Raiser Game

Tonight I was called into action to do a School Fund Raiser Game. A first for me. WILD TIME!

Get to the gym and it's packed (about 500 probably) - Friday night, two bands, school colors, pom-poms, etc.

1) Table announces every player - first time for me when everyone was from a college - Joe Smith, JMU; Jim Adams, VCU; Jane Jones, VA., etc.

2) National Anthem was the longest in recorded history......why didn't the bands play it?

3) My P and I are talking and the coordinator wants to pay us right there on the court. We pass until later. She explains there will be 4 x 10 minute quarters with clock stopping on every whistle. Me - seriously? Hey - these people paid $4 a ticket and want to see lots of ball. Seriously? that's a long game......

4) Game starts and one team hits its first three, three pointers! Quality of the game is very good.

5) I get together with my P during a TO in the first quarter and it's 20-18. We were impressed. Few fouls or violation.

6) At half-time the score is 26-24. Both team ran out of gas and couldn't hit squat!

7) Half-time was 20 minutes and no one knew why. Only entertainment was a teenage, Latino dance troupe, who came out with 5 minutes left and shimmied a bit.......

8) Of course now the game starts getting chippy as the teams both want to win..... It is now decided everyone is so tired and it's getting late, they want to go to 8 minute quarters with a running clock - shocker! (I'm told parents are waiting ya know). Me = good move!!

9) I got paid at the game for the first time.

Actually a lot of fun!

Faculty Games ...

Back when I was teaching, I used to play in these games, but the faculty played against the students. These games would draw bigger crowds than the regular season games. We would get a couple of our regular officials to volunteer their services (I would slip them a few bucks for gas and laundry). Once I made a picture perfect bounce pass the new lead before he made his final approach to the endline, and he scored on a layup. He got a standing ovation from the crowd.
