Ok....got a pretty basic question here. There are so many rules to memorize and get straight that sometimes I get lost even in the most basic ones.

Time-outs

Can Coach A call timeout after Team A has made a basket and Team B is throwing in the live ball or does it have to be called prior to the basket being made?

Just wondering??

The team A coach, or any player of team A, can call time out after his team has scored a basket until the ball is at the disposal of team B. Once team B has the ball, team A can request a time-out but the official should not grant it.

FWIW (not much, I know), the NBA does not allow this TO

A player or head coach (assistant coach also, NCAA Women's) may "request" a timeout but they cannot "call" a timeout.

After a score by Team A, a player or the head coach (see note per NCAA Women's) may request a timeout and the timeout request should be honored if the request is made during the dead ball period after the goal was scored and the ball became live when it became at the disposable of Team B for the throw-in.

This little "request" vs "call" debate has started to drive me nuts. The official doesn't "call" timeout, either, does he? He GRANTS it.

What is the definition of the word "call", anyway? From m-w.com, the first two definitions:

1 a : to speak in a loud distinct voice so as to be heard at a distance : SHOUT <call for help> b : to make a request or demand <call for an investigation>

I think the coach or player "calls" timeout and the official "grants" it.
