The first session of my New Applicants' class is tonight. I will be pounding Tums, while asking my students for updates of the Sox and the Rays during our breaks.

To be honest, the best I can hope for right now is a one-game playoff tomorrow. I just don't feel good enough about this team to think that they'll win AND the Rays will lose. Fingers crossed, but it just doesn't seem like it's been that kind of September.

JRutledge Wed Sep 28, 2011 11:24pm

Well Chuck at least there is basketball season.

Peace

My Braves and your Sox both went down in epic fashion.
What an end to the regular season! Three of the four games involving the potential wild-card teams were classics.
It was a great day to be a baseball fan.

Agreed.

The Nats finished the season strong! Many of us in the Nation's Capital are actually optimisitic about the Team's future and look forward to having a very competitive young team next year and in the year's to come!

Heck, maybe next yr we'll get 2M fans again......been a while. :o

Zoochy Thu Sep 29, 2011 02:24pm

Nothing against you Chuck, but I am glad Boston Red Sox missed the playoffs!
Go Yankees. First team to 11 wins.

JRutledge Thu Sep 29, 2011 02:37pm

Both my Cardinals and Tigers made it and I did not expect the Cardinals to make it at all. So I am happy that I can watch with some interest in both leagues.

It was the best possible result. No team with that large a lead that chokes it away deserves to be in the playoffs. Dan .108 Johnson. Are you kidding me??? Longoria for MVP. His numbers are without a month missed due to injury.

After the Moneyball book, and movie, is the Triple Crown still as important as it used to be?

I don't know about MVP, but the MVE (Most Valuable Executive) is the guy in the White Sox organization who decided to let Ozzie go. Maybe they can bring back Al Lopez.

Chuck? You ok?
:D

ChuckElias Thu Sep 29, 2011 09:14pm

Thank you for your concern, but I'm actually fine.

I'm honestly not as broken up as you might think. It's been pretty obvious for 5 or 6 weeks that the Sox weren't good enough to do much even if they did make the playoffs.

I'm disappointed, obviously, b/c they seemed to be so good for most of the summer. But once injuries kicked in, there was no help for the pitching; and then it seems like everything else fell apart too. We could've gotten nice "Wild Card" t-shirts and then gotten swept by Texas.

Oh well.

mbyron Fri Sep 30, 2011 06:08am

I must say you're weathering this historic collapse as if it were just the Mariners missing the playoffs again, instead of the team that led the division much of the year and had a 9 game lead in the wild-card going into September!

As for being swept in the playoffs: I remember the last time they made the playoffs as the wild-card team. It's like lotto: you can't win if you don't play...

Good to hear you're ok, Chuck!

I watched the Sox in Baltimore on Monday... something just wasn't clicking. 90% of the fans were Boston fans and you could tell they were on the edge.

Just several hours away from kicking off the postseason....Go Cardinals!!

26 Year Gap Sat Oct 01, 2011 01:49pm

Off to a good start with Matt Moore putting in a Ken Dryden-like performance. Just his 4th game and 2nd start. 7 shutout innings. Shields, Hellickson, and Price (if necessary) are next up.

Well, I'm not going that far, but seeing ARod whiff for the final out of Detroit's elimination of the Yankees in a Game 5 in Yankee Stadium, I couldn't help but feel that somewhere, Mick, Sparky and Ernie Harwell got together to lift a cold one in celebration.

All four series clinchers were by one run. Tough to see the Rays go down, but their hitting was always going to be a problem.

Nobody will remember the 2011 Rays or the 2011 Yankees. EVERYONE will remember the 2011 Red Sox. Just sayin'.

Well, there's certainly no interesting baseball news coming out of Boston lately  , but tonight is Game 1 of the World Series!! I was hoping for a Texas/Milwaukee series, but I'll be happy enough if the Rangers beat up the Cards. Seems like a looooooooooooong time ago when the Sox swept them in '04; they need another beatdown. Might be good for LaRussa's humility :)

Will the chat room be open tonight!?!? :D

Hey. It was in a Gatorade cup. That makes the beer a sports drink. Beer's gotta have some electrolytes. Right?

ChuckElias Fri Oct 21, 2011 08:21am

Only the third time ever in World Series play that a team has trailed 1-0 entering the ninth inning and won the game. EVER!!

That's not quite as big a surprise as I originally thought, tho. The first time I saw the stat, I thought it said 3rd team to win after trailing entering the 9th. And I didn't really think that could be right. But trailing specifically by a score of 1-0 entering the 9th. There probably haven't been all that many games that were 1-0 entering the ninth to begin with.

Anyway, Series tied, I'm happy to say. Of teams that won Game 2 to even the Series, 29 of 54 have gone on to win -- but just two of the last seven, the 2002 Angels and the 2009 Yankees. So there's a better than 50% chance of a Texas win!

ChuckElias Sun Oct 23, 2011 03:14pm

Nobody wants to say anything about Pujols last night???? 3 HR, 5 hits, 6 RBI all tie the single-game World Series records and his 14 total bases set a new record.

Think that will get him the contract that he's been waiting for?

Give me a few minutes and I'll write a song entitled, "Reggie, Albert, and the Babe".

Is there a spot for him in the Red Sox lineup? Can he drink beer in a Gatorade cup, and eat Popeye chicken?

Very impressive! And yes, just write a blank check and hand it to him.

By the same token, same can be said about the Rangers tonight. Great night by Holland - although, I thought Kulpa had a wide in/out zone tonight.

Nonetheless, looks like I'm going back to STL on Wednesday for Game 6.

I was in attendance for Game 1 and it was very impressive! Looking forward to it!!

I agree. Both Holliday and Freese didn't think much of his strike zone.

I'm jealous.

ChuckElias Mon Oct 24, 2011 07:08am

GREAT pitching performance by Holland last night for the Rangers. Cards went 0-4 with RISP, which is amazing for 2 reasons. 1) They only came to the plate 4 times with anybody on 2nd or 3rd; and obviously 2) they couldn't muster even one hit in those situations.

And, oh by the way, SportsCenter is saying that Joe Torre is going to look into the drinking in the Red Sox clubhouse. Why, exactly? Everybody has acknowledged it, and from what I've heard from other players, it seems to happen in most clubhouses. Even if it happened in the dugout, which everyone seems to deny, I'm not sure I see why MLB cares.

From the article......

Heart-thumping drama. Historic performances. Epic meltdowns. Strategic maneuvers and misfires. Dropped phone calls. Rally squirrels, antlers and sitting ducks.

You name the element, and the World Series between the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals has it.

So why in the name of Albert Pujols aren't more folks watching?

I have to say that I was rooting really hard for the Rangers, so I'm a little disappointed by the result. But it really was a fantastic World Series. Game 6 was just unbelievable. (How do you blow 3 separate save opportunities in one game?!?!?) The bullpen screw-up in Game 5. Pujols just blowin' up in Game 3.

I've heard some commentators call it the best World Series ever, but I still remember the '91 Series and that one may still get my vote for best of my lifetime. ('75 was great, too.)

Now, I'm faced with the prospect of Theo and Francona teaming up again in Chicago. But no way am I becoming a Cubs fan. I've done my 86 years in Purgatory, thank you very much.

(There's also talk of Francona replacing LaRussa. But if I had to bet, I'd say they go with Jose Oquendo, who has been the 3rd base coach there since 2000, for continuity's -- that means "Albert Pujols' " -- sake.)
