McDonalds All American Game

How do they decide who officiates this game? The officials have side panel shirts on and they're using college timing...so can I assume these are college officials?

It varies by city. And sometimes they are college officials and sometimes they are not.

Peace

Got a peek at the alternate and he's got a CCA jacket on...everything about this game seems to be college based

I did not say you did, but I guess I am not sure why you are surprised college guys would be working the game? No big deal.

It does appear that a certain assignor was contacted to assign the game as it appears to be guys he knows well. Actually it looks like a current board member of the association I am President is the alternate. Two of the officials I know personally and they do work college for the most part. I know when the game was in Milwaukee a couple of years ago, a friend of mine worked the game and he has some D1 experience as well.

I also think guys that have college experience are often used because the athletes are so much better than what a normal referee that works mostly HS would see up close. And I do not know that you would want guys wearing HS jackets and patches of a particular association as well.

Peace

All three of the officials working the women's game last night are college D1 officials as well. None of them work high school at all.

I was fortunate enough to work the girls game a few years back when it was in Milwaukee and the group the one the bid to host the game and events were in charge of assigning the officials. They sent out emails to a group of officials asking for our officiating background and then a committee picked the officials for the games.

Not unusual for college officials to work All-Star games in football and basketball. After all, the kids have completed their HS eligibility and are moving on to college ball.

I saw this coming................................

As soon as I saw this topic, I knew it would be headed in this direction. What should the assigner do ??? Use his loyal high school guys who work every tues / wed/ fri or use the guys in his board that work college basketball and officiate a few high school games a year.

If I was an assigner, I would get the best guys in my board and get guys who go to camps in the summer and see this type of talent. I am sorry the guys that work all winter long and see a bunch of 6ft. suburban kids playing center, just don't cut.

Slam Dunk at the Beach (Lewes, DE), had this problem to a degree back in the 90's and brought officials in from the big cities (Balt / Wash / Philly) and some of the local guys weren't very happy......

Who know what the right answer is ..........

All star games are the easiest games in the world to officiate. Nobody plays defense and all you do out there is direct traffic.

Watching the College Three-Point Shooting Competition. Each player has a ref following them around the arc to ensure they stay behind the line and signal if they make the shot.

Color me there!

LOL! It's an All Star game...my wife could officiate it!

You let the kids play and make a call when a shooter gets fouled.
