The difference is whether this was a young official who just started and didn't know any better or an older vet who doesn't care and doesn't try.
The first one I am behind 100% and think we should give all efforts to help. The second should be taken out behind the gym and shot. |

It is safe to presume
The young official was in over her head and probably felt as if she "deserved" the verbal abuse.
I recall those first few games and realize that I certainly should have T'd the coaches, but was not comfortable with what the threshold was. I also know that I have much "thicker" skin than the typical official, (I teach in a Juvenile Prison) so I am one who does not T nearly as often as other officials. I am working on being more consistent with the local threshold. [Edited by williebfree on Dec 12th, 2002 at 07:38 PM] |

Thanks Dan!
Officiating is easy compared to motivating a kid to apply himself academically when he is telling you he can make more $$$ in a weekend (pushing drugs) than you can in a month or two of teaching. Of course, my response is... I can sleep heartily and know I am doing the right thing (even if I have a bad game :D) |
