D1 aspirations??? Be a minority or a woman....that is pretty much it in a nutshell....(flame suit on)

ChuckElias Fri Dec 13, 2002 08:33am

That's not "it", but I don't think any would deny that it helps.

I worked with a woman last night that said she went to a camp last summer and never heard back from clinician. So it isn't necessarily a slam dunk. BTW, she is only in her third year so I wouldn't expect her to be picked up so quickly. I told her to give it another year but I am not sure she was ready for that advice.

I've talked this camp up before....for high school refs that want to improve I still recommend the JB Caldwell Camp at Embry Riddle Univ in Daytona Florida. I would call this camp a stepping stone camp to either improve your high school game (my case), get seen by bunch of Florida high school assignors or to improve your game to the point where you would consider a college camp. I went last year and plan on going again this year. Camp is reasonably priced ($150 - 200 not incl room and board) and they dont expect you to work 7 games a day. I was there 5 days and I worked 14 games total, all boys varsity 3-man. I am an Ohio JV ref and I have already noticed a boost in confidence and ability this year over where I was a year ago.

Myself, I doubt I'll make D1. Got started too late. I'm 34 and in my 4th year. I hear they want 30 year olds who can run like gazelles. But you never know. I can run like a Gazelle....but I'm svelt like a rhino! (Unlike JR who looks like a Gazelle....but runs like a rhino)

Camps are great, I highly recommend them, but it is not a ticket to D1. You probably won't get there without the camps, but just going won't guarantee you a spot. There are only about 1200 D1 spots nationwide (600 womens and 600 mens). One thing that consistently gets left out of the discussions is talent. You have to have talent to make it to D1 and not very many people have that much reffing ability. I think it was somewhere in the thread that someone said you need to be in the top 10% of whatever level you are at to move to the next level. This is very true. It is rare that someone will come out of left field to take a roster spot, it happens, but not very often.

IMO, if you wnat to make it to D1, work hard at the level you are at, become the best there and move up through the ranks. Attend a camp every year, one that will challenge you to be better as an official and hope you have talent and some luck.

Does it make sense to do a camp in Daytona, FL if I'm never gonna work in Florida? You said HS assignors in Florida would see me, but they wouldn't talk to assignors in Eastern PA would they? Tell me more about this camp and why I'd want to attend from PA.
