Interesting story - it highlights some of the issues with small schools.

But I noticed the name of the team they beat in the opening round: the Butternut Midgets. I thought I had bought a couple of boxes of those from a neighborhood Girl Scout?

Isn't "midgets" a derogatory, politically incorrect term for "little people"? I'm surprised they're using that.

Of course, when I was in HS about a century ago, the Pekin, Illinois HS teams were known as the "Pekin Chinks"! No, I'm not kidding. They're now the "Dragons".

The "Siren Dragons" is an excellent team name too!

When I was young, I wanted a pony.

We couldn't afford one, so my parents bought me a midget.

We hung him on the rear view mirror in the car.

He hung there for a year or two....and b!tched and b!tched and b!tched.

Funny you mention that. There is a high school way up in northern MO (within spitting distance of Iowa) named Putnam County High School. Their mascot is the "Midgets" as well. That's right - the PC Midgets.

My all time favorite team name is for Cobden HS in southern Illinois. Their team is the "Appleknockers". BTW - the school in on Appleknocker Drive. Of course it is.

Midgets are missing a couple of things.

Powerful lobby and white guilt.

Charlie "Midget" Fischer, of Butternut, Wisconsin, the 1/2-pint size Samson who holds the world middle and light heavyweight wrestling championships, was born to be a wrestler. Backed by no fanfare of publicity, no background of football or other athletic honors, and possessing only a marvelously developed physique, Fischer began wrestling in 1924--at the age of 24 years--and within a month had won the Cook County Illinois, middleweight and light heavyweight amateur titles. Within three months after he had first donned wrestling tights, the Milwaukee Midget had won second honors as a middleweight in the Olympic games tryouts.

Participant in nearly 500 mat matches, Fischer never has lost a finish, 2-fall match. He also is one of the very few wrestlers ever to hold two major division titles, and the first to hold the middle and light heavyweight titles.

b. 1898.
d. 1982.
