First time poster, long time reader...

For those of you that use (or have worked with a partner that used) the Mini Fox40 whistle, has anyone commented about the different pitch or low volume of the Mini?

Danvrapp Tue Dec 03, 2002 02:15pm

Nope. I used it for two years before I traded it in for the bigger one. The mini sounds an awful lot like the "regular" Fox, if you ask me.

I teach a class for new officials in my local HS association and we tell all of them to get Fox 40 only and specifically not minis because of the sound and volume. I am sure there are those that will disagree, but I believe the sound and volume are much better on the Fox 40.

Welcome aboard Whistle.

From my perspective, the low volume of the mini is preferred in a small gym with minimal amount of fans; especially if it is volleyball and you are whistling constantly.

Yes

I do find the sound different. And less capable of BOOMING out a call that needs to be sold.

The sound of a mini is similar to the sound of the casual official with his regular sized Fox 40 coolly placed in the corner of his mouth so only one half of the whistle is really working. Cool, man! Far-out.

The full size can easily be tooted quietly.

Not to get everyone excited; I know some excellent, very capable veterans that carry their whistle in the corner of their mouths. They can sell a call and yet have made a career out of not needing to sell calls. Just wouldn't recommend that casualness to a new official.

Just my somewhat humble opinion,Tony

I worked with a guy last year, and after about four minutes of play, I asked him, "What's wrong with your whistle?"
He said he was trying out this new mini version. I told him it sounded like...well, he got the idea.
Anyway, he agreed and stopped using it after that game.
I thought it sounded really weird.

I agree. The first month of my career as an official was with a mini. Thought I could save some money. Forget it. I now own a nice collection of classics. The sound is a lot better.
