Ot- Soccer player tackles streaker, then gets the boot

Your thoughts? Was the official off base by tossing the player?

Personally, as both an official, and a cop as my day job... I'm not calling anything on the player.

Take it to the soccer forum.

I am asking the opinion of basketball officials what they'd do if this happened in a basketball game. Who cares about soccer?

I'd make the player wash his hands before I let him touch the basketball.

If someone issued a red card in a basketball game, I'd put that official on my "do not work with" list.

Some of us do, but you did not ask within the context of basketball in your OP. I'm with Ray Stevens on this one.

I work soccer and basketball.

No red card, no technical foul, no penalty of any type. If anything, I'd shake the man's hand, though JR is probably onto something regarding prelimary sanitation.

Soccer rules are different than basketball rules. It's apples to oranges.

Under FIFA rules, the call was correct. No such rule exists in basketball.

Therefore, there's no reason for this discussion on this forum.

I care about soccer, enjoy watching it being played by professionals. Funny...if you don't care about soccer, then why did you read the article?

For soccer, the call was exactly right. The offense there is violent conduct and there is no specification as to whom that conduct is directed.

In basketball, I don't see how this is a foul since it doesn't involve an opponent.

In baseball they run on the field and the players ignore them. Security?! Go get the taser!

In football, they get tackled! Whack!! Cheer! Play on, no penalty.

Agree, it's handled differently by each sport.

Heck, the streakers in tennis run right back into the stands......play on!

I stand corrected. From the 2010-11 Laws of the Game -- FIFA version:

Quote:

A player is guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball. He is also guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against a team-mate, spectator, match official or any other person. Violent conduct may occur either on the field of play or outside its boundaries, whether the ball is in play or not.

Lots of fouls in basketball do no involve an opponent.

Right, an official could consider the contact to be unsporting (or even flagrant) and penalize accordingly.
