The end is near

Just got my local rec league kids schedule for next weekend. One BV game Friday night and a B6 and a B7 game on Saturday. That's it for the season. There's a spring league at a local Y, but I'm going to pass. Don't know if I'm going to come back next year. I have some medical problems which, combined with my advanced age, might just force me to hang it up.

Maybe I'll do some more volunteer training of HS kids as long as I don't have to run up and down the court. Our kids rec league recruits some each year and they start by working 3rd and 4th grade games. Some of them stuck with it and a few eventually worked "real" HS games. In fact, one became a college official. Most of his early training was done by me and by his dad, who is also an official.

I know I'll miss it, but all good things must come to an end, or so the song goes. :(

My last weekend is coming up too. Cheerleaders, packed gyms, excited players, coaches, and fans - gonna be a good one!

Mark, for the sake of the rest of us, if you don't referee, at least go to the gym so you can bring back great stories! No one tells em like you!

Good luck with your health too - and especially!

Don't do it Mark. Keep working... but do less games. :)

I actually met Sinatra and the rest of the "Rat Pack" (Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Joey Bishop) in Vegas in the 60s. My grandfather worked at hotel casinos on the strip for many years and one of the times I visited him, we went to the Sands to see the dinner show and he took me backstage to shake hands with them. He was working at that hotel at the time.

BTW - for a few years in the 1920s, my grandfather worked casinos in Chicago for Al Capone. Not kidding.
