I was pressed into service at an AAU tournament last weekend when one of the assigned refs did not show. Games were being played under NCAA rules; I made a call that I think was right, but want to check for sure. (Since I don't work NCAA games, I don't have my own rulebook). My partner didn't seem to know, either.
A1 is shooting a free throw, A2 is waiting outside the three-point arc, above the free throw line extended. After A1's release, but before the ball touches the rim, A2 goes over the three-point line (towards the basket to rebound). I call a violation on Team A.
Team A coach reminds me "we're playing NCAA rules--they can go on the release". I explain my understanding of the rule, my call stands, and the game continues.
As far as I know, the NCAA restrictions are like the "old" NF restrictions from a couple of years ago. Only players lined up along the lane can enter on the release. The shooter and anyone not lined up in the lane must wait until the ball touches the rim before she can break the plane of the free throw line (in the case of the shooter), or the free throw line extended/three point line (in the case of any non-shooters not in the lane). Am I correct?
