AAU may have adopted this new experiemental rule from pre-season college: only 5 players on the line and the shooter. Total six. College women already use it. It helps to eliminate the congestion in the lane. Therefore, it could be an AAU change of a local rule change. But this is the rational.

Girls' AAU tournaments in my area (Michigan) follow women's NCAA rules. Therefore, we initially have had to teach/remind players and coaches about the rule related to how many players can be on the free-throw lane lines. I've often wondered why AAU uses college rules to begin with, since the vast majority of teams consist of young kids playing or who WILL play high school ball.
