There must be a case book play or interp for this situation? Have you tried looking for the answer?

From the typing, I'd guess that the OP is a player, not an official.

The basket counts, if made. ALL intentional fouls result in the award of 2 free throws plus the ball at the OOB spot nearest the foul. The only exception is a missed 3-point shot: that gets 3 free throws. Very easy, and the rule has already been cited.

All intentional fouls save a MISSED 3 point shot.

mbyron,
Weird computer problem on my end? Your second to last sentence doesn't show on your last post
"The only exception is a missed 3-point shot: that gets 3 free throws." but when I quote your post to add a comment, its in your post as plain as day.

Ahh, I see your edit, must have been in transition, no rotation!

Had an intentional foul on a good layup last year. Counted the points and gave two free throws.

Before administering the ball, coach and players wanted a third FT, because the basket was good.

I went to a day clinic for new officials with a D2 clinician who insisted it was always two shots, even on a missed three. Kind of a weird rule for a college guy to mess up on.

Before they added the 3rd FT on a fouled 3 pt attempt that missed, it probably was like that. Rare to see, so he probably answered on the fly.

Way back when they added the 3-point shot, the questions about how many free throws for a foul on a missed 3-point attempt, how many shots on a successful 3-point attempt, how many shots on an intentional foul on a successful 3-point attempt, how many shots on an unsuccessful 3-point attempt, etc. all had to be clarified during the first year, and in the book the second year. Because it wasn't in the book to award 3 shots on a missed 3-point attempt, there were instances in games where the strategy was to go ahead and foul the shooter - so the most he/she could score would be 2 via the free throws. It made for some interesting moments during games.
