New one for "That Guy"

Last night's captains meeting, our R's last line: We're probably not going to be perfect out there. Only one man was perfect and they hung him on the cross. Now let's go play and have fun.

My tongue had bite marks through halftime.

Bingo. :)

I'm wondering if I worked with that R before? I seem to recall some long winded guys in DM.

Rob1968 Thu Feb 10, 2011 12:13pm

That Guy sure gets around . . .

In a game last week, after my partner spent 2-3 minutes in the captains' meeting , he asked if I had anything to add . . . The captain standing next to me had long braided hair -(I shave my head) - so my response was "I'm just jealous of her hair . . . It seemed to break the tension the captains were feeling, after the lecture in minutia . . .:)

Maybe they were two Christian schools. ;)

You are clearly old and antiquated...The Jimmer is "the way, the truth, and the life"...

Deibler is an over romanticized creation of this earth (averages only 11.2ppg?)...The Jimmer is clearly a higher being who has a scoring average that knows no earthly bounds (27.5ppg).

Ask yourself this..."would you rather spend time with a Buckeye? or a Cougar?...

Imagine if it was "adulterated blasphemy". You'd be sinning twice at the same time!!!

I don't see a problem with this. How is this offensive??

I don't find it offensive, just over the top for a captain's pregame. Others may find the official's "witness" to be offensive; I would agree it's likely inappropriate in a setting like this.

I agree with the expressed sentiment, but not here.

I'm not planning on adding it to my pregame either; but here in the bible belt, I think very few, if any, would bat an eye at this comment.

All it takes is one, but that's not really the point of thread. The reference to "that guy" is similar to my signature line. I might even add the line to the sig.

Adam Fri Feb 11, 2011 12:02pm

Although I might try the line on my wife the next time I screw up. Probably tonight.

My money's on "If it's good enough for him, it'll be good enough for you."

DesMoines Fri Feb 11, 2011 12:35pm

None taken...

Bison: I wasn't offended... just surprised I heard it as part of a pre-game talk.

I'm going to do my best every game, but stuff happens. I recognize I'm probably not going to get absolutely every call perfect, but I'm certainly not planning on telling the kids and coaches that during a pre-game meeting.

Snaqs: Good luck with that. :D

Rich Fri Feb 11, 2011 12:44pm

I feel the same way when someone says "We'll work hard for you, coach" before a game starts.

Isn't that the expectation? It's rare that I say anything more than "Are your players properly equipped? Good luck." Anything else isn't worth my breath.

Exactly. Remember, it's not what you say, it's what the coach hears. And saying "we're not going to be perfect out there" gives the coach the opportunity to hear "I (the official) suck". Why give the coach that opportunity?

Not offensive. IMO, it's neither the time nor place for that. I would never dream of saying that, and I'm in a place where one could easily get away with that.
