You should believe it, because it is.

Unless, of course, this player starts his dribble before getting up.

If the player is not dribbling, it is travelling, your beliefs notwithstanding.

I have to ask -- are you an official? These questions are easily found in the book.

As long as he's not holding the ball...

4.44.5 SITUATION D:

A1 secures possession of the ball with one knee in contact with the floor. May A1 assume a standing position without committing a traveling violation? RULING: It depends on what A1 does. If A1 attempts to stand up while holding the ball, a traveling violation occurs. However, if A1 starts a dribble and then rises, no violation has occurred. Also, A1 could pass, try for goal or call a time-out from that position.

Well look at that, it's the exact play.

Saw one last night I had never seen. A1, trying to break the press, turns the corner loses his footing, falls flat out, but still maintains his dribble. He stands up, then picks up the ball, along about which time his coach is granted a timeout.

Naturally, the whole B world wanted to know why it wasn't a travel.

Unless, of course, he sets the ball down in order to get up (while not holding the ball).....

Would that be considered the start of a dribble?

No. It's a travel when he picks it up. If it's not bouncing, it's not dribbling.

Maybe I am misunderstanding this play, but a player who secures the ball on the floor, puts the ball down, stands up, and is first to touch the ball has traveled. Correct? Did he continue the dribble as he stood up? When you say "picks up the ball", I am envisioning the ball resting on the floor.

Ball was still bouncing as he quickly got back to his feet. He grabbed the ball with both hands about the time the timeout was granted.
