Angry Charlotte, NC fight at basketball game

CHARLOTTE, NC HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL FIGHT JAN 28, 2011
Uploaded by Futuristicblogger. - Basketball, baseball, pro wrestling and more sports videos.

Don't know if anyone else saw this on their local news, but a real mess at a Charlotte, NC basketball game. My understanding is that it had nothing to do with the game in progress, but was started when security officers asked a fan of one team to move away from the other teams fans. At that point, two of that persons family members jumped into the fray.

As always a sad commentary on some of our society members.

I was working this game. It wasn't a good situation.

From what the video shows, at least there was a fast response to try to de-escalate the situation.

Unfortunately the video does not show what started the altercation.

History? Background? Insight? Details?

What would cause a "fan" to jump security like that?

Something had to have been said to cause a reaction like that, or the one fan tried to start a fight.

In some situations when a person is already fighting, they'll fight anyone else that comes close.

Eagle - thanks for your insights. But, I was trying to get some info from the person that was actually there.

It was kind of a rhetorical question.

This appears to happen on an endline near an exit, which is where our security personnel usually stand.

While I don't currently perform basketbal security or work as a member of a table crew, I am a former military policeman and kinda understand these situations. I was just curious about this incident to see if the poster could actually shed some light on it - all else is speculation.

Fan on fan in the stands is one thing. Fan on Security? Wow!

The thing is, the guy he was fighting wasn't school security, he was a Meck PD officer. Assault on a police officer...not a good idea in my opinion.

Grunewar,

I've done security/crowd control for Formula 1 racing, rock concerts, family shows/events, WWE House shows, Rap concerts, Minor-league hockey, Country Concerts, Arena Football games, College football & basketball games, high school football & basketball games.

In general security/crowd control situations, the right to use lethal force is not authorized compared to being an MP.

I was at slot when this whole situation began right behind me. They basically gave the guy 2 options, either move to the section where his fans were sitting or leave the gym. He kept saying that he wasn't moving to the other section and that he wanted to stay there. That is when the ball went to the other half of the court, so I'm not sure exactly what was said, but by the time we were coming back he was being escorted out of the gym. As they were getting him out, he started flailing his arms and started punching the cops.

I'm not exactly sure why he started to fight them, but obviously he wasn't very happy about something. As far as I could tell the police/security was being respectful, but very straightforward with him. He was not being cooperative from the beginning.

I have never been in a situation like this before so it definatly threw me off guard, but did my best to stay calm and get the teams back to the benches (you can see me in the background getting them back during the video). It was a crazy game, that's for sure.
