Need glasses ?

I had the number 2 in state vs number 4 in state HS boys game on Friday night. About 2:30 left in OT I was on the end line at the position of the pending throw-in while my partner was administering the time out. A girl, about 10 years old walks up to me and holds out a pair of glasses. Not being the sharpest tack in the box it didn't occur to me right off the bat what she was up to. I thought maybe she found a pair of glasses and was turning them in to me. OK OK I know. I say "those aren't mine." she says "you need them." Had I been quicker I would have put them on. My partner pointed at the game admin to take care of it. Nothing happened and the crowd got a chuckle at my expense. Oh well, full gym, loud crowd, great game!

I'd be pretty tempted to take them and put them in my pocket. The reaction of the smart azz parent that no doubt put her up to this would've been priceless. :D

I saw a fan get the boot for pulling that stunt himself last season. It was at a Christmas tournament. He was back the next day and was quiet as a church mouse.

If you want to go the NVref route, you should of gotten game management to escort her and her parents/caretakers out of the building. You know, if you wanted to be a harda** and all. ;)

I believe Nevada would've found a way to issue a technical foul. ;)

Turn it around on them.

Next time, have a pair of Groucho Marx glasses ready (complete with nose and moustache). The next time someone hands you glasses, just say, "thanks, I already have these," and put them on.

You might want to take them off before the time-out ends.

Bend down and softly whisper in her ear, "Go tell your Dad that he should be very proud of the sportsmanship lesson he's teaching you."

just take the glasses and put them in your pocket and continue officiating...she won't do that again...and "someone" won't have their glasses.

when she asks for them back, just say her father will have to come and get them from you...when he shows up, embarass him a little ("what kind of imbecile sends their daughter to do something they're not man enough to do?"), then have game management eject him.

won't happen again from him or anybody in the crowd that witnesses that.

Had somehting similar to this happen in a rec 8 and under soccer game last year. I'm Asst ref by home crowd. Guy hollers out " Hey ref, you want to borrow my glasses" I shouldn't of, but I whipped around and fired back, " Thanks, but I can see that they're not doing you any good." Crowd got a huge laugh. He shut up.

8 and under, I probably would have said the same thing.

Don't know that I could/would use this technique, but, I like it!

Take the glasses, "fold" them in half, put them in your pocket and say "Thank you!" Yes, that's what I would have done because I've thought about it many times after something that happened about 10 years ago.

Was working a VBoys game. I'm at C, L calls a foul. A deputy leaning against the wall behind him took off his glasses and offered them to my partner. Of course, my partner had his back to him but I saw it.

During the ensuing timeout out, I walked over to the deputy and asked him, "Are you here to provide security or act like the rest of these idiots?" No reply but he stared at me the rest of the half.

The next day, our booking agent spoke with the Sheriff, who used to be an official. I've never seen that deputy work another game.

Dang, I was hoping that you tossed the deputy! I would love to have seen that!

Hm, I wonder who would have escorted him out? :D
