Officials give ball to the team that DOES not have possesion arrow.

Play continues for nearly 30 seconds, at this time the table notifies crew of the mistake.

What is the proper procedure here?

Once the throw-in ends, it is too late to correct the error. Have the table make sure the arrow is pointing in the direction of the team that SHOULD of had the throw-in for the beginning of the period. Inform the coaches. Play on.

I can't imagine any coach with half a brain not taking offense, unless you had already built up a good rapport with him. It just seems condescending to me.

Bingo. I've been around the block a few times, so the veterans know me quite well. Wouldn't try it on a rookie, and wouldn't suggest that a rookie try it, that's for sure.
