OT--Congrats are in order!

My dad, who I roped into officiating basketball with me last season, just successfully defended his doctoral dissertation this morning at Northern Illinois University!!

He couldn't take any games this season because he's been working towards this final goal, but hopefully now that it's done he can get back into it. He also does baseball.

Congrats, Pops!

Seriously, This Is Not A Joke ...

My son is currently working on his doctoral dissertation in sociology: "Interactivity, Interdependence, and Intertexuality: The Meaning of Video Games in American Civil Society".

He is considered to be an expert in various forms of media, especially modern media, and also in how celebrities are portrayed in the media.

He should finish up next year. Anybody got any job openings?

I wonder how much research he's been able to find on the subject of video games...I'd have to think there isn't a whole lot.

His Chinese born wife is writing her sociology doctoral dissertation on the sociological implications of Chinese version of "American Idol". Those Chinese really do like to vote, even it's only for their favorite singer. This voting thing may eventually catch on in China, over a lot of Chinese dead bodies.

Also, she's presently working on a paper, soon to be published, on the sociological implications of the computer game, "World of Warcraft".

One small step for a man, a giant leap for mankind...

He might be better off practising saying "would you like fries with that, sir?"

Next should be "Do you want fried rice with your #2?"

The real joke is on all of you New York State Forum members. He's on a full academic scholarship in the State University of New York (SUNY) system, as is she. Gives a whole new meaning to, "Your tax dollars at work".

Saw a neat documentary on that same subject called "Gamers" There have also been several other documentaries such as The King of Kong: A fistful of quarters Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade (and gives Ottumwa Iowa props beyond M A S H) and High Score. I am not a video game geek, but I do play one on tv!:D
IT also sounds like his reasearch was a heck of a lot more interesting than mine!!
