cell phone while officiating

So i ref a county tourney game with an older official, 20 years exp., state finals patches, ect. He called a good game but was texting during every deadball, timeouts, OOB plays, ect. I thought about saying something but decided to just get in and out. Well at halftime AD says he fielded several complaints from fans re: his cell usage. He gets mad and tells AD its not detracting from his calls. AD walks out. Would u say something or let it go? IMO....he made us both look bad.

I would probably say something to the assignor. My guess is that there have either: a) been others who have told the same story, b) others who are good officials who have blocked the guy from being a partner, or c) both.

Are you in an aarea where an Assignor gives you your games, or do you contract with the AD?

If you have an Assignor - let him/her know about this asap - before the AD calls and telss him/her.

If you contract with the AD, don't worry about it - they won't be calling him anymore.

A guy that was on my football crew the last couple of years had a small voice recorder he used for fouls and to record other things that came up during the game. A coach thought he was on the phone once and asked him to stop using it during the game. He showed the coach what it was and said it related to the game. Since, we've given him a hard time about it, asking him if he has his phone before going on the field, telling him to get off the damn phone, etc.

His memory is THAT bad? How'd he pass the test? Oh, wait! I think I know the answer to this one. [j/k]:D

And NFL official did that a few years ago in the Super Bowl.

Probably trying to find if the point spread, or the over/under, of the game had changed.

Could he had been talking to his agent?

I normally have my cellphone with me all the time at the table, however I rarely get phone calls on it. The primary use of my cellphone is the use of the walkie-talkie feature for in case needing help with something.

I would have said something to him, veteran or not. I will sometimes hold my tongue when I'm working with a veteran and they do something wrong, but not in this case.

If I did that here, I wouldn't have to worry about if I would be calling any more games. This would basically put me into mandatory retirement

Guys like this give us all a bad name. You needed to say something to him the first time you saw it...that is total crap on his part. I don't care how long he has been working or how many patches his has on his shirt.

If there were ever times you should whack a crew member, I'd list this as one of them.
