Mark, from your previous posts you don't allow the coachs in your league to make derogatory and demeaning remarks to officials. How can you condone the exact same behavior from an official to a coach?

And I feel that the coach/parent behavior is the main reason I simply don't work those games. They don't miss me and I don't miss them.

At this point in my so-called career, the only positive thing these games would do for me is put some money in my pocket. Money isn't everything.

This wasn't "my" league and it's not really a "real" league. It's an independent "competitive" MS organization and the teams actually are quite independent. The league only does the scheduling - the teams actually contract for gym space with the various school districts on their own. There's really no overall "authority" for conduct or anything else. The assignor just contracts with the league to schedule the officials and we are paid by the home teams at halftime of the individual games.

Quite a few of the games I work for this group have coaches who, at one time or another, coached in my local kids rec league, so I know a lot of them. They know that when I make a remark, it's just kidding and they go along with it. I will very rarely make a remark, unless it's an obvious light-hearted joke, to a coach in this organization whom I don't know.

BTW - the head coach actually cracked up at my partner's comment.

Leaving that out of your narrative changes the scenario. We were led to believe he's just a smartass.

I'll never do games just for the money, if it's not enjoyable why bother? I'm one of the weird ones that aren't bothered by idiot coaches, perversely it gets my Irish up, and I like the confrontation. To quote JR, I just "take care of bidness". I really only do a summer men's league which is spectacular with plenty of current and ex D1 players along with some overseas pros. They can get a little testy, but everyone respects the game and the refs.

Agree. And I'll never do games for free (few exceptions: i.e. Special Olympics.). I'm sure that most of us are somewhere toward the middle of the money/free spectrum.

Our association promotes the occasional local charity by asking for officials. We also work the scrimmages for free each year.

I agree with you but you and I both know that we both have had that situation far too many times to count and that we wished that we could have responded just like Mark's partner did.

1. Discussing things we'd like to say is different than actually saying them.
2. Mark may have left out the familiarity with that particular coach, and it certainly affects my opinion of the exchange, but I still think it's inappropriate. The coaches and officials aren't the only ones who are going to hear it.

I said that we wish we COULD have said that, not that we wish we HAD said that. I agree, there are many things we would love to tell a coach but ethics and professionalism prevents us from making such comments (at least we are with friends and a good watering hole, :D.)
