Opening Jump Ball

I am U1 chopping.

Nice Toss.

While both A1 and B1 jump for the ball A1 clearly gets the ball and slaps it OOB my side.

I call B's ball and we move on. Coach A is yelling, " come on jump it again"

WWUD?

What would you do?

We stayed with what we had.

???

I assume no control. So, I would have called OOB on A, given Team B the ball for throw-in, and set the AP towards Team A's basket.

It seemed simple to me, but the coach really complained....He wasn't from around here, it was a visiting coach.

I clearly had A1 getting the ball and moving it to where he wanted it to go, just no one was there.

Sounds like you got it right. Don't worry about the coaches...they are silly monkeys.

"Based on what rule, coach?"

I might be just curious enough to take a moment to force him to make his case or shut his trap.

"Nevermind" ...

Five words that will strike terror into the heart and mind of any coach.

Mind? They have minds? I once told a coach who apparently assumed I would know he wanted a timeout after the other team made a basket but he didn't actually ask for one, "Coach, I'm not a mind reader - which in your case would be particularly difficult."

I had something similar this year, and as I was pointing the direction, the coach asked "Re-jump right? Wait....what? Uhm...ooook?"

Maybe there's some coach myth going around about this on BasketballCoaching.com ;)

I'm sure that Coach B was in complete agreement with Coach A...

Why are you questioning yourself about this play? What occurred on this play that was so strange?
