In Game Signals to Partners

Does anyone here use any signals to communicate with your partners during a game?
- Clenched first = tighten up its getting rough
- ect.

Depends on who I am working with and what they know, sometimes they are pre-gamed but I have seen
  • "Bull horns" facing each other to show we're shooting 1-and-1 on both ends
  • Sticking out a fist to show the next dead ball will be a media timeout
  • Point to wrist or in the air to show time is about to expire or there is 1 minute left, again depends on who I'm working with
  • Hold fingers showing about an inch to mean the shot clock is low during a dead ball
  • Running hand back and forth to indicate the player inbounding the ball may run along the baseline, also point to the spot to indicate a spot thrown in

In NFHS, that last one is a recognized signal. Generally, I'll still use items one and three from this list. (We don't do media time-outs or shot clocks here.)

We do the bull horns each time we get to 6; we don't wait for both teams to get there.

One bullhorn when the first team reaches 6, two bullhorns when both are at 6+ :)

In TX, does that irritate Aggie fans?

Fans of "The Breakfast Club" generally enjoy this signal!! (You mess with the Bull, you get the HORNS!!)

Around here officials will generally use signals 1 & 3.In my games reporting of the sixth foul also comes with a verbal warning such as "Bonus on the next _______!" Some will also use the shot clock violation signal to note that the shot clock is almost out!

That's actually from "Some Kind of Wonderful" and yes, I need to get a life.

Resume regular posting.

It may be in SKoW, but it's definitely in The Breakfast Club.

I knew that movie so well as a kid... YouTube - the breakfast club 1985 Paul Gleason

There's one official here who taught me once that if you make eye contact to "shorten your lanyard around your neck" to signal, let's tighten it up. I like it.

BillyMac Thu Dec 23, 2010 08:39pm

What Does This Signal Mean ???

Draw the right hand, palm down, across the neck in a throat-cutting motion from left to right.

Isn't the ball dead following a made basket? I don't think they take media time-outs after goal are scored.

brainbrian Mon Jan 03, 2011 01:19am

Sorry, the media will be the next time the clock stops. They are not after a made basket.
