So. . . how did YOUR night go?

Here's mine.

Double technical foul three and a half minutes into the game. Flagrant technical for a punch during a dead ball with 6:10 left in the game. Unsporting technical with 3:45 left in game after kid fouled out.

Only saving grace is that nobody came off the benches after the punch.

Happy holidays. :(

kgeorge0263 Wed Dec 22, 2010 10:29pm

Last Night

So I transferred boards and now a new face for boys varsity game. Had a big time rivalry game last night. Could've used a 3rd official but my partner and I called a good game. Had a total from our crew of 7 charges. 1 on 1 in first minute of 2nd quarter.

So ball comes inbounds to visiting team in front of bench, heavy pressure by a home team guard. A big man sets an obvious illegal screen and the guard hits the deck. Gotta have a whistle and call offensive foul. Coach is livid...

He calls my assigner after the game saying I wasn't ready for that type of game, but I recall my call selection, no calls (let them block shots), etc...I was quite happy. Wish I had a game tape to see that play to confirm it was the right call.

Happy Holidays!

That sound like one of my nights in places that I should not have been in when I was in college, :p.

I hope that thinks get better.

Forgot the "T"

Oh..I forgot...early 4th quarter visiting team applying heavy pressure and fouls ball handler. I call a foul and one of the visiting players on my way to the table calls me a "homo"...so whack..."T". Coach asks why...and I told him what he called me.

I'm surprised you didn't toss him.

Scrappy, you make my night of braving Wally World and insane drivers sound sane!

I'm with Welpe, he's done in my game at this point. I'm pretty sure I'd be grilled by my assigner if I simply called a T on this without going flagrant.

Did the coach pull him?

Don't we have a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in officiating?

kgeorge0263 Wed Dec 22, 2010 10:52pm

Coach

The coach did not pull him...I think he still had issues about the offensive foul. I can see your perspective of running the kid, but they were down 10 and didn't want to create more pandemonium. He did not say it very loud, but audible enough for me to hear it. It was a packed house...so I'm quite sure no one else could've heard him.

kgeorge0263 Wed Dec 22, 2010 10:54pm

General comment to coach then?

So how do you justify to the coach why a "t" was administered? Should there be no explanation for it? We are to communicate with coaches when they ask questions (he did ask me in a calm manner), I feel I can tell him the need for the technical foul.

Just my 2 cents.

bigbeardedbryan Wed Dec 22, 2010 10:59pm

My night went alright, thanks for asking!

Girls JV. Visitors dressed six players. Teams combined for probably 50 turnovers (at least 30 travels or illegal dribbles) and 40 fouls... and 37 points. It was 8-8 at the half, and, after a scoring orgy of unprecedented magnitude in the 4th quarter, the home team missed a wide-open three-footer with about two seconds left and wound up losing, 19-18.

Ahh, small-school basketball.

Judtech Wed Dec 22, 2010 11:01pm

We played the better part of the 2nd half with a boys ball.....and the team cut our 20 pt lead to 8!

kgeorge0263 Wed Dec 22, 2010 11:06pm

tonight's game

A lot different game today 3:45pm Girls Varsity. Score is 33 to 1 at the end of the first quarter. After 35 point lead, had a running clock last quarter. Score ends up 66 - 13. The one team could barely dribble and didn't even look to shoot, while the other one shot at least 65 percent from the 3pt line.

We've had three double technicals in the past two games.

Honestly, around here, i don't care if I'm the only one who heard it. If it was loud enough to get a T, it's loud enough to toss for that word. I understand your reluctance, but I would have felt none

billy was just being billy, something like this he should be told. The fact that he didn't pull his kid is concerning for me, to be frank.

Oh my.......

You wouldn't call a well-deserved flagrant foul because you were afraid of the reaction.

Yes, "afraid" is the correct word.

Oh my.......

Sorry, but that player has to go and a report also has to be put in after the game.

Oh my......

Coach= "What did he say?"
Me= "Ask him."

I usually don't shut down communication with coaches like this unless they've already burned the bridge. I think it's important to have the adults on the same page as long as they're acting like adults.

Yup.

In my experience, the great majority of coaches honestly don't want crap like this coming from their players and will do something internally about it...if they know about it.

If you do run into a coach that wants to wiseazz back at you after you (quickly) explained the "T", just deal with it.

Neither do I. But earlier in his post he mentioned that the coach was livid earlier in the game from an offensive foul that was called.

That is a lot of players fouling out. I guess each team had a chance to win, so there was no need to whip out the travesty card.

Call up the home coach and ask if you can get a copy. I do it fairly often and most coaches are very accommodating as long as you do as much as you can on your end (send a DVD and stamped/addressed envelope if it's too far to drive and pick up).

Different sport (soccer), but a friend of mine issued a red card this year to a kid for basically being calling him the same thing. This is a no-brainer, IMO.

It really doesn't matter WHAT name a player calls you. If it isn't "Sir" "Mr Official" or something similar.....

It matters in order to decide between normal tea, or special ejection tea.

Many years ago I was coaching soph girls BB. After a particularly trying game, the V coach asked how it went. I said, "We were playing them even until they went on a a 4-2 run over the last 6 minutes." ugghhhh!!

Excellent decision, especially here in New England. It's going to be very cold sitting on the bus waiting for the game to end.
