How many in a day?

I thought an interesting follow-up to my thread about how many games did you work this past year might be: what is the most you've ever worked in one day?

A few years ago on a Saturday, I was scheduled for three local kids MS rec games in the morning (starting at 8:15, which is standard for us) but one of our guys had to cancel at the last minute and I stayed to work his shift (another three). All six of those games were 8th grade boys at a middle school. I then had a MS tourney that evening and I worked four games starting at 6:00 including one semi-final and the championship game, which started at 9:45. I got home a little after 11:00. So, in about 15 hours, I worked ten games, the last four on a standard HS court with only a few minutes between games. This calendar year, the most games I worked in one day was seven.

Fortunately, my pharmacy is open on Sundays.

For basketball, my record is six ( 4 MS, a JGV and a GV)

Soccer's record is eight. Did a tournament in Steamboat Springs about three years ago in 85 degree heat. Started games at 8AM, was supposed to do 4, get a break, then do 2 more. Other ref never showed...... I was a spent puppy that day.

Did he make it on your Christmas card list that year?

just another ref Mon Dec 20, 2010 06:48pm

Most in a year: don't know

Most in a day: 11 I did have two one game breaks on this day.

There was another day where I called 10. Started at 9 am. 5 minute halftimes. 5 minutes between games. A half hour break at noon. Other than that, we were playing. Finished up about 10:30 pm.

I don't recommend either of these formats.

I'm guessing you mean 5 minutes between halves. ;)

11 baseball games in a day? T-Ball? No way.

Scuba_ref Tue Dec 21, 2010 01:46am

I did 9 on Saturday and 8 on Sunday for a 17 game two day total a couple of years ago...the last couple of games it was hard to get stopped while moving and even harder to get moving after you stopped. It reminded me of the feeling I had 30 years ago when I did my 50 mile hike for scouting - we were dropped off 50 miles out of town on a Friday evening and walked until late Saturday night. Somewhere along the way I lost the dehydrated peaches we were saving for the end of the hike, unfortunately I didn't lose any of the heavy stuff in my pack.

9 kids games with a 3 hour break in the middle. I did work 5 high school games in one day (GJV, BJV, GV, BJV (ref didn't show up), BV)...all 5 games on a rubber or tile floor! OUCH!

Today I usually only work 3 games during tournaments in the summer each day...getting too old! :)

The MS gym I've worked the most (literally many hundreds of games) has a hard composition floor. Around here we call it the "knee killer". :o

For you guys around Portland, it's Fowler MS in Tigard.

Some of my Catholic middle school games are played on a tile on concrete floor. Cafetorium/Gymnasium. Knee killer, and ankle killer. Four games on Sunday. Two aspirin before, and an adult beverage, or two, after.

After checking the arbiter, it shows me doing the following on a weekend this past summer: 10

first game at 8a
last game at 9p

1 hour break every after every 2 games

A Pennsylvania Coach Tue Dec 21, 2010 05:19pm

I had two six-game days in the past year. Record is eight, but I'll never do that again.

Actually I also did 10 in one day and 16 in a 24-hour period, but with this qualifier: it was a double elimination tournament that started games on the half-hour: 10-minute halves, running clock until last two minutes. And I did the last two (loser's final and final) three-man!

Gee, I did five last Saturday (3 in the morning, two evening) and my legs were shot about halfway through the last game. Will now head for gym. I am not worthy.

I thought it was the Mount Padgett Reformatory, Auto Repair Shop and Middle School. Tattooing also done on site. Home of the famous Mount Padgett Dexters, the competitive grade 1 co-ed basketball team that has won a national record 367 games in a row. Let those UConn wimmen try to top that one!

Hey! Whatever happened to that Dexter guy who used to post here? I think he was from CT.

6 for both basketball and baseball.

Any more than that and I'm not doing the job the way I want too. As nice is the 240-360 bucks is, it's not worth the toll it takes on my body.

BillyMac Tue Dec 21, 2010 08:03pm

Lets' see? When I was married, about two, or three times a day. Wait? I'm being told by the control room that the question refers to basketball games. Nevermind.

chartrusepengui Tue Dec 21, 2010 10:21pm

BB - 12 in one day - 20 for two day total. NOT BY CHOICE!!

MS - 7th and 8th tourny.

20 minute running clock - stop clock last 2 minutes each half with a 5 minute halftime.

We had a bad snowstorm and 4 officials ended up in accident. (fortunately no serious injuries but they never made it) We had to cover our games and theirs.

I didn't think I would get up on Sunday morning. Monday was pain in every part of my body every time I took a step.

Tuesday wasn't bad though.

chartrusepengui Tue Dec 21, 2010 10:22pm

The only good thing about that weekend was that we were paid in cash and didn't have to wait a month to straighten out the checks.
