Illegal Shoe

I just received notice that the Concept One Shoe is illegal for NFHS. I ref in Pennsylvania and we just heard about this shoe, has anyone else in different states been told about this shoe yet? THis is what the bulletin states:

BANNED SHOE
A new product named Concept 1 Shoe has been under investigation of breaking Rule 3-5-4 for greatly increasing a player’s height. Based on this information, the product is prohibited for competition based on NFHS Basketball Rule 3-5-4. It states “Equipment which is unnatural and designed to increase a player’s height or reach or to gain an advantage shall not be
permitted. Equipment and apparel shall not be modified from the original manufactured state and shall be worn in the manner the manufacturer intended it to be worn.”

More information can be found at http://www.athleticpropulsionlabs.co...unchtechnology.

Yep - Kansas has also ruled the shoe is illegal.

bob jenkins Mon Dec 06, 2010 11:57am

Banned in IL.

I think it's also banned in NBA.

Adam Mon Dec 06, 2010 12:00pm

Banned in CO.

I'm not sure "banned" is the right word for it. More like "prohibited from being worn while participating". Sorta like jewlery or improperly-colored headbands.

But yes, it's not legal to wear during competition in MN.

The link above didn't work for me, so here's where I found it: APL Basketball Shoes | Concept 1 Black | Athletic Propulsion Labs Men?s Footwear

I haven't heard of this before today, and after reading the site, it sounds like a scam to me.

The patent-pending Load ‘N Launch™ technology is implanted in a cavity in the forefoot of the basketball shoe and is designed to provide an instant improvement in vertical leap.*

Scam or not, we've been instructed not to allow players to wear this shoe in CO.

So are you going to line the players up like a little kids' soccer match and check all their shoes? I honestly don't think I ever look at a players' shoes unless they are some hideous color that grabs my attention. The black with the lime green might attract my eye, but the white colored APL shoes I would never even notice.

What procedure did the State give you guys to check the shoes?

chartrusepengui Mon Dec 06, 2010 12:42pm

banned in Wisconsin

PIAA REF Mon Dec 06, 2010 12:58pm

We will just look during warmups, the site that I posted has some great pictures, the best thing to look for is the name APL on the shoe, that site that I posted will come up as an error, but if you scroll to the bottom of the page you will still see the shoe. See if this works better:

They didn't, and I'm not sure I'd notice. We haven't been instructed to go fishing, if that answers your question.

I just looked at the shoe's website and as a parent I love my sons very much and always bought them first class sports equipment BUT what idiot would buy a pair of athletic shoes for his child and pay $300 for them.

MTD, Jr., just reminded me: Why spend $300 when everybody knows that PF Flyers are "guaranteed to make a kid run faster and jump higher". :D

It's banned in VA. Check in the weekly news updates on the VHSL website.

bob jenkins Thu Dec 09, 2010 08:29am

iirc, NFHS has banned it. So, it's banned unless the state chooses to allow it.

Did they send something to coaches? I've not heard of this before this thread.

NFHS doesn't send information directly to coaches, afaik.

rwest Thu Dec 09, 2010 08:46am

Not banned in GA as far as I know

We in GA haven't heard of this. Well, at least no one in my association has informed me of this shoe being banned. I'll have to look into it.
