Real "Jump Ball" Yesterday

Third time in four years -- had another real jump ball following the jump ball to start the game yesterday! How weird is it that I remember and keep track of these more than the number of deer I've shot?

Or held ball before the arrow is set.

In FED, the two players involved must jump.

In NCAA, any two players may jump.

Only if you count competing to turn the ball over the most.

Funny when it involves one team's tall player versus the other team's shortest player. Just as funny when it involves two guards. In many cases, they've never done this before, and they look like deer in headlights.

They have to be in the center circle so that they may jump. But if one player chooses not to jump, as long as he is in the circle, and does not catch the tip, he's good.

I've had this happen twice. Once it resulted in a re-jump between a little and a big, the other time it was two guards who I'm pretty sure (based on the deer in the headlights look) had never been jumpers at any time in their young lives. None was old enough to appreciate my, "Welcome to 1970," comment.

Man, that brings back memories. My Sr. year of High School, we did not really have a center - tallest kid was about 6'1" or 6'2" and could not jump to save his life, in a league where most schools had several guys 6'5" or above.

So I would be our "center" - at all of 5'8". I never jumped. I just tried to anticipate where the other center would tip it and react and get there to tip it away to one of our guys. Worked a few times...but the looks I would get from these 6'7" guys as I stepped into the circle was priceless.

Had it once. Wreck league boys. Whistle, thumbs up, and a three-word command: "You two, jump!"

General reaction, "OK, cool."

Saw it this summer. #2 son (17yo) was working tournament finals w/ 20+ yr 'veteran'. As my son was directing 2 skinny guards to center circle, his partner has original jumpers set for redo.
My discussion with vet after the game resulted in him losing a $35 wager to poor box at my church. Could have sponsored a whole new set of choir robes if I challenged him on all his blown calls.
Kudos to my son for keeping a straight face and respectful manner with the old codger.
I was not bound by any such restraints when he first called me "Just some AAU parent whose team lost" after the game. He finally succumbed to the logic of the Fed rules book on my smartphone and grudgingly paid up. I would say he is the proud owner of several new rules interps

Money from a wager going to the church? My God, what would Sister Mary Stigmata say? Wait. I now exactly what she would say:

"No, no! I will not take your filthy stolen money! You are such a disappointing pair. I prayed so hard for you. It saddens and hurts me that the two young men whom I raised to believe in the Ten Commandments have returned to me as two thieves, with filthy mouths and bad attitudes. Get out, and don't come back until you've redeemed yourselves."
