Just finished up volleyball yesterday! My first game is in three weeks on 11/30-when does everyone else get started?

But since I do not work that, my HS season starts the week of Thanksgiving. I have a college game next week. I am still working some football so I cannot work earlier.

Peace

Well played.

Looking for the source of my knee pain. Initial doc thought it was meniscus. Physical Therapist thinks it's an injury to the iliotibial band. PT directed at the IT band didn't work, so the doctor sent me to the Ortho, who seems to agree with the PT but has ordered an MRI since therapy didn't help. It may be more therapy that gets ordered.

I hate that damned roller thingy.

Back In The Saddle Mon Nov 08, 2010 11:00pm

Yeah, the roller is a whole big bunch of no fun. But I keep one around just to remind me to stretch my IT band regularly. 'Cause if I don't, I end up back on the roller.

A day that shall live in infamy?

chseagle Tue Nov 09, 2010 01:42pm

Sorry but if this is an attempt at a joke, it's a very bad one, as my maternal grandfather was there at Hickam Field that morning.

As I see it, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day (December 7), & Patriot Day (Spt. 11) need to be made Federal Holidays in place of MLK Day & Labor Day. Or instead of MLK Day, have it be called Civil Rights Day.

"Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, members of the Senate and the House of Representatives: Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan."

I disagree almost entirely. Sure, change MLK day to Civil Rights Day. It's an ideal worth celebrating, but hardly achieved. As for labor day, don't be dissing on the working man. We're what makes this country work, not the pathatic yahoos we send to Washington.

OTOH, I have no desire to celebrate those events that sent us headlong into two major wars. Though, we ought to pause and remember those who perished on both days. But when it comes to celebrating a national holiday, I feel it is more appropriate to celebrate those who fought and died (Memorial Day) and the end of hostilities (Veterans Day).

As for my "very bad" joke, I was merely implying that your return to your duties at the score table would be "a day that shall live in infamy". If you feel the overpowering need to infer some kind of slight to your grandfather, well I guess you'll need to figure out how to deal with that.

chseagle Tue Nov 09, 2010 02:53pm

So even though it was the Unions that started Labor Day, it should still be celebrated? So we should be celebrating those that get overworked but underpaid?

When I am saying make both Patriot Day & Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day into national holidays, I am meaning to remember those that lost their lives & as a reminder not to make the same mistakes over again. Concerning MLK Day into Civil Rights Day, we should be celebrating the ideals & philosophy, not one man.

Why we're at it creating holidays, why not make a Sport Officials' Appreciation Day? Since there's days for teachers, secretaries, etc.

Concerning my returning to working the table, I have been doing more studying this year concerning rules/regulations & have been attending meetings of one of the local officials' associations.

What I am meaning is that people should be getting paid what they're worth, not working their life away while earning pennies on the dollar.

This has gotten political now, so I respectfully request you stop; or else I might be too tempted to jump in and ruin my reputation (whatever it is).

+1

I've always thought that the third Monday of every month should be a holiday and we'd celebrate "all" events for that month on that day.

Don't want to celebrate labor day? Don't. Celebrate "autumnal equinox day" instead.

It will never happen, of course.

Our girls MS seaosnw as this fall, so I already have 20 games under my belt.

CYO basketball appears to be starting this weekend with at leat one pre-season tournament. (League season starts 3 weeks from today)

I've had two scrimmages so far, one college game on Nov. 6th (preseason tourney), and I start with 5 games this week. So it begins...

JRutledge Tue Nov 16, 2010 09:20pm

Less than 24 hours I have my first game of the season. College game and I am looking forward to it. It is about time the season gets here. I am tired of talking about basketball (between the classes and meetings) and not officiating it. ;)

Peace

How about something plain and simple: Back Seat Driver

chseagle Fri Nov 19, 2010 04:41pm

Sorry to burst everyone's bubbles, but all they are going to say apparently will be "Event Staff".

The AD has no idea as to what the design of the shirts will be as of yet, so we could be getting t-shirts or polos, or even black & white striped shirts LMAO.

Concerning a separate horn for the scorer am thinking of doing something similar as I saw during the Div. 1 games on ESPN with different sounding horns meaning different things.

1) Well, t'hell with all of 'em, Chseagle. Wear you regular uniform.

Super Chseagle!!!

2) Great idea. Maybe you can get the Tijuana Brass to give you a hand. And maybe you can keep a mariachi band on hand too for those occasions when you think a "T" should be called. Go for it.

chseagle Fri Nov 19, 2010 06:40pm

Sorry don't want to be adding to the large Hispanic population by adding a mariachi band as a mariachi band would mean drinking & partying. (not appropriate for HS athletics).

My normal uniform has been, b4 last year, a polo & slacks. Last year I was wearing the 4A Regional Event Staff shirt with slacks.

I didn't request that we get the shirts, it's something the AD decided to do.
(Apparently he got the idea after seeing us wear our 4A Regional Event Staff shirts).

26 Year Gap Fri Nov 19, 2010 06:45pm

Just concluded the 2nd week last night with 2 VB games. The second one wa a local team getting blown out of the gym [24-6 at one point], trailing by a similar margin at the half. They gradually got back into the game and the team in the lead missed a bunch of FTs, and the coach had NOBODY in the lane spaces for about 12-15 of them. You guessed it. I got to chop in time again. The local team won by about 4, so a last second 3 point attempt would likely have been insufficient unless it was made with a foul on the shot. So, no second OT. Glad they were 3 man crews.

Don't make them send them back for correction, should be "Junior Under-Assistant for Crowd Control" and, due to his bad wheels, "Special Attache to the Ministry of Silly Walks". (props to Monty Python).

Wasn't there a jobber known as The Scorekeeper? I think even HE lost to Barry Horowitz (really reaching out to all of the true past or present pro-wrestling fans on this one).

Worked for my first high school game tonight. Quote of the night from a coach questioning why I called an intentional foul against his player for excessive contact. "But he got the ball. You can't call intentional if he got... the ball."

Oh and working games with almost no voice is NOT a fun adventure. I think I sounded like Chip and Dale squeaking out that intentional foul call.

Looks like when I get the shirt I'll have to take pictures of it as well as of the 4A Regional Staff shirt.

Not as much fun as a scorekeeper with the same issue, I'm sure.
