Wow... I'm pretty certain I would not have let AC get away with this nonsense. I probably would have T'd him before any of the "talking to the coach" part happened.

Depending on situation/mood/comments:

1) To the HC I'll say something like "your assistants don't have the same privileges you have" or "Coach, we'll listen to you but your assistants need to quit commenting"

or

2) I'll tell the assistant directly that we've had enough of his comments.

Other than directing a coach to return to the coaching box I try my best not to tell a coach what to do.

Seems that camps I have been to have recommended this approach for talking to coaches about players, but I cannot recall if there has been much discussion about AC and using this approach.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see your answer already...helps if I read through the whole thread first.

I also like the response to the coach that the AC didn't give him time to comply with the official's request.

Not knowing what else was said or proximity etc. I am leaning towards a tad quick. After the AC's comment I would wait to see what/if the coach took action i.e. "<name> That's enough" etc. thus giving the coach time to take care of the problem. If they don't, then I would step in.
