Watch Those Arms...
 

In my mind, this was an easy call. However, because of the stink that was raised over it...I'm going to ask.

A1 is a post player. He's "floating" on the baseline and approaching the lane. Now picture in your mind this guy holding his arms out...not straight out in front of him...not straight out to the side...but rather somewhere in between. B1 and B2 are attempting to guard this guy, but they can't get near him without this guy's arms stopping them from approaching.

A1 had been doing this just about the whole night and I didn't call it because up until this particular point, the defense was able to defend him without being hindered by the guys arms. But when B1 and B2 weren't able to approach him because they were tangled up in the guy's arms, I called a holding foul on A1.

If A1 would have pulled his arms away when the defense got near, I wouldn't have called it...but as far as I was concerned, A1 was intefering with the cylinder of B1 and B2. Naturally, A1 argued that he didn't move his arms and therefore he couldn't have held anyone.

Did I kick it or call it correctly???

sounds like a push-off to me. No player is allowed to clear space this way.

By the NFHS rule set, we call that 10-6-4. A player cannot extend his arms (except vertically) that hinders an opponent's movement at the time of contact. It may not have been a hold in your case, but it sounds like illegal contact, at the very least.

this would be a team control foul, BTW, and I think the same holds true under Metric Rules.

At least, that's what the number is in the FEEBLE rule book as translated into French.

would this rule also be applicable to an offensive player dribbling the ball with non dribbling hand/arm extended (arm bar protecting space. arm does not extend outward, just protects)?

I'm confused, is the arm extended or not? If it's extended and is preventing the defense from reaching a spot they would normally be able to reach, it's a foul.

...provided there is contact. But I knew that's what you meant. :)

If there's no contact, then nothing is "preventing" the defense from getting to the spot. :)

i'm envisioning a point guard dribbling hard right over the division line while being closely guarded by a defender. the guard is dribbling with their right hand. their off hand isn't hanging limply at their side. it's extended to some degree for balance if nothing else. does that help a little?

IMO FWIW, it's judgment. She can't use it as an arm bar to keep the defense away. If she needs it for balance, she might want to take up chess club or debate team or something.
OTOH, if the defense sees the arm and just gives up ground, it's nothing.
