Dallas v. Portland-NBA

Anyone catch the Dallas Mavericks vs. Portland Trailblazers game...specifically the last half of the 4th quarter? Talk about a hostile environment!

Officials: #41 Ken Mauer, #60 David Guthrie, #65 Sean Wright

Busy ending for the crew. From about the 4:18 mark in the 4th a sequence of plays went as follows:

1. Andre Miller makes a tough lay-up to bring the game within one...Andre Miller thinking he was fouled, subsequently gets a T. Smart!

2. Next trip up the court for Portland, a close out of bounds call goes against Portland. Nate McMillan subsequently gets a T. Three point game is now a four point game. Got to love the well timed technical here!

3. About a minute later, Portland commits an absolutely silly foul which brings a mandatory timeout. Come back from the break and we see the officials have ejected two fans from the game! Very rare event at the pro level, so they had to have done something real bad.

4. Right on cue 20,683 fans start chanting "These refs suck," and some objects are thrown on the court.

How did it go from a one point game to a three point game after a technical foul?

Shooting foul...Dallas made one out of two free throws. Specifically Dirk Nowitzki made the technical free throw, ball came up the court and Marcus Camby committed a foul on Brenden Haywood and he made 1/2 FTs.

Maybe they entered the court.

Seriously, I don't care about the Ts--the part which I find of interest is the fan ejections and the crowd chant. Wonderful publicity and image for the NBE. :D

Maybe one of the players was related to the fan and said player was hurt. I'm sure he just wanted to help the trainer. ;) :D

Did you see the situation with Carmelo Anthony of Denver lying supine on the floor following a traveling violation? He didn't get up and play was restarted. He continue to lie there, and as neither team requested a time-out, play was not stopped by the officials according to the NBA rules, until another traveling violation was committed by his teammate while attempting to score on that same end of the court.

I could see people coming out of the stands following such a situation in a HS contest.

The NBE commissioner, Vince McMahon Jr., will deal with it. All security persons at NBE games from now on will be issued chairs for swinging. And particularly unruly fans will be ejected through tables.

He was just paralyzed with amazement that traveling was called in an NBE game. The official that did so was immediately sent to the NBDL for further training.

I saw the game and the play, and to be honest I thought he was faking it at first. Turns out he was briefly unconscious. I was surprised they didn't call a 20 right there and then. And then I was surprised they didn't foul when Oklahoma had the ball. And to make it 3/3, I was  when Denver got the ball back and continued to play 4 vs. 5 and play around him!

Under NBA rules, the officials could of stopped play if the player was seriously injured. I've seen this happen maybe once or twice ever. I think an unconscious player on the court would qualify but be hard to determine. Under the circumstances, Denver was quite lucky a lot worse didn't happen.

NBA Casebook (2009-2010)
285. Player A1 mistimes his dunk attempt and lands very hard on his head. By every indication the player is unconscious and there is the possibility he is seriously injured. May the officials suspend play for the protection of the player?

Yes. The officials may suspend play at the appropriate time whenever a player is seriously injured and it is urgent to get him immediate treatment. The player must be removed from the game and the opponent will be allowed one matching substitute. Only the offensive team may be granted a timeout as per timeout rules.
RULE 3 - SECTION V - j - exception (2)
RULE 4 - SECTION XIII - exception (2)

He might have been injured, but nothing in the play where he traveled would explain the injury. He barely bumped the defender.

Agree

Unless maybe he tweaked a nerve or something in his shoulder/neck somehow. You could see him grimace in pain at one point. Doesn't look like he hit his head on the floor though. Agree there was very little contact and a good travel call.

Me, I'm blowing that play dead way earlier than that, especially when the Nuggets got the ball and drove it right by where he was laying on the floor. That's dumb to let go IMO.

Maybe he had just watched a Serie A or La Liga game.

Portland fans do get pretty nasty at times. Although that doesn't explain Rasheed Wallace's attitude!

I turned on the game after watching a 24 hour "Law And Order" marathon and caught the last ten minutes or so. It did seem Ken Mauer was a little quick on the trigger but, of course, I wasn't there and I always give the officials the benefit of the doubt on calls.

As to the fan who was kicked out (I don't think there were two), either he threw something out onto the court or he came out onto the court. The cameras weren't on him until security was already at his spot so there was no way to tell. As he was escorted out, he kept raising his arms to incite the crowd and some of them cheered for him. It's my understanding if he's a season ticket holder, team policy is he loses his ticket but gets a refund for the remainder of the season. He also loses his advantage of first choice on playoff tickets, which is the worst of the deal, since there's only two home games left. Since he was at a court side seat, the odds are he was a season ticket holder.

APG Sat Apr 10, 2010 04:10pm

I believe they showed a second fan being escorted out due to making it difficult for game management to toss out the first fan.

And I agree we're blowing that play dead earlier if we're playing under NFHS/NCAA rules. That ball is never inbounded in the first place, but under NBA rules, that's only happening if that's a seriously injured player. From the initial contact and player movement that occurred immediately afterward, it would be hard to say it was a serious injury.
