OT - and we think our coaches overreact

Minor league hockey coach Jim Playfair (a misnomer if ever there was one) reacts to a call against one of his players a few days ago.

YouTube - Mississippi Braves AA Manager Phillip Wellman goes crazy

This is the most bizarre tantrum that I've ever seen by a coach.

canuckrefguy Mon Mar 29, 2010 09:08pm

Getting major league play up here. He coached the NHL's Calgary Flames for a year or so.

And he is refusing to apologize for his actions.

If you look carefully - you can see the players on the bench to the right of him are peeing themselves laughing when Playfair loses it. :D

Not a Fan

of the premeditated crap these guys pull.

Sure, I like an occasional Leo "the lip", Billy Martin, or Earl Weaver, but for me, I'd rather they just fly off the handle for a few seconds, show their emotion at the spur of the moment, and then......WHACK and GONE!

But, I did enjoy the infielder laughing at the baseball manager as he went towards right field. :p

Okay, sportsmanship aside, that is some funny sh** :D

if Bobby Knight was a comedian.......
hilarious clip(baseball). whenever they do those best of lists it will be there for many years to come.

No clip is better, IMO, than the classic Earl Weaver / Bill Haller argument from 1981. It's NSFW, you've been warned. There's one line Haller uses early, though, that I've always wanted to use with some coaches/managers.

Like someone else said, this is a pre-planned, premeditated act. I went to an umpiring clinic last fall and one of the instructors was a AA umpire for a few years. He said that Wellman did that stuff as a show for the fans and nothing else, and the umpires knew it. (I'm pretty sure he knew the umpires involved in that video) He also said Wellman left those guys a case of beer in their locker room afterward for "playing along".

Man,
Now that's a tantrum! The only thing I've seen that was sort of close to that was when we lost a 300 pound halibut at the boat because a green deckhand stepped on the pedal that makes the hydraulics go and the line snapped! Captain was verrrrry unhappy!

I reacted like that guy once when a coach politely asked me about a rules interpretation during a break.

How did the crowd react when you smashed your cane across the scorers table? :D

I recognize that name from somewhere? I think that she's somewhere on the internet? Maybe one of you guys can find some type of video with her in it and post it here for us? Most of us are probably not too familiar with her work.

Earl never recovered from the Gil Hodges shoe polish ball, did he?

"Haaaa boom!"

I was going to post that if you didn't beat me too it!

Mark Padgett Mon Apr 12, 2010 11:10am

I did some research and found out that Jim Playfair's middle name is "Doesn't".

There are 2 great things about that Earl Weaver rant:

1) Check out the scoreboard...that happened in the bottom of the 1st!!!! Talk about an early night.

2) Haller's line: "You're going into the Hall of Fame Earl??? For what? F**king up World Series."

What they used to be able to get away with (sigh).

This reminded me of a great anecdote I read from Tim McClelland on the MLB.com site a couple years ago. It's the second question from the bottom.

The image of Jack McKeon yelling and kicking dirt while carrying on a conversation about where to eat dinner is just something that stuck with me.

Wonder if the Trader had a lit stogie in his mouth at the time....

I would too, but Playfair is usually such a quiet, reserved, technical kind of coach that this was WAAY out of character for him. So it leaves you to wonder what really set up off like that.
