Our insurance coverage doesn't apply if we work with non-licensed officials.

And I think that most sports insurance packages read that way also.

The guy who told me about it was licensed with the state, but that doesn't necessarily mean every official in that league is.

This is an interesting point. Here in CO, many middle school games are assigned using non-IAABO officials. Many of our rec games are similarly scheduled. I'd never considered insurance ramifications.

The best policy you can have as a referee in any sport is the Policy that is included in the NASO membership. The scope of coverage includes ANY contest officiated no mater how you were assigned or self contracted. $94 per year for full NASO membership.

Schools usually carry their own group insurance for their own games. And sports officials may be covered under that group insurance also. Iow, dependant on your local coverage you may be double-covered, covered or not covered if you work with a non-licensed official. Not a bad idea to find out imo.

We have a school district here who goes further. ANY coach from ANY sport who gets ejected is FIRED. Not just their coaching job but their teaching job as well. It is open to a review of the ejection but they were tired of some of their coaches (non basketball) being ejected so they went this route. Amazingly, they haven't had a coach run since!
