Intentional and One

Saw this happen last night in a girls regional semi-final and thought I would pass it on for informational purposes.

With less than two minutes left in the game, A1 goes to the basket on a break-away lay-up and is pushed from behind by B1. The ball goes thru the basket. The official scores the basket and indicates an intentional foul.

The players all line up for free throws and the calling official reminds his partners that the foul was intentional. They then clear the lane and proceed after a little discussion, to give the shooter three shots.

O.K. students of the rules - What should have happened here?

That's easy.

Clear the lane, 2 FTs, desginated spot throw-in for A at end-line.

BadNews gets the prize for being the first with a correct answer (even though I know he is supposed to be working at his real job)

For any of you who might be wondering about how he came to his conclusion, you will find the play in the NFHS casebook at 4.19.3 SITUATION 3

I'm not sure why this is a hard problem. Am I missing something?

I think he intended it as a newby question.

It's another example of officials applying two penalties to one foul.

What should have happened was that the officials should have picked up a rule book and read it before shooting the free throws. :(

Dude, when you edit, try to leave the [/quote] lines in. It'll look prettier.

I always want to ask these guys, "if he missed, would you have given him 4 shots?"

While reading this thread I noticed that just about everybody who had posted in the thread was still in the Forum and they should have been working. :D

Have a great weekend everybody!

I know - Its the computers fault. Did the computer get it right this time?

By the way, Has anyone ever seen a official get out his rule book during a game to get a play right? Getting it out to show up the coach doesn't count. I've seen it done in baseball, but never in basketball.

Adam Fri Feb 26, 2010 01:51pm

Never seen it for any purpose.

I keep pdfs of the rules, case and mechanics on my PDA. Normally just use it to settle rules disputes with fellow officials...Beats flipping pages

Which of the tree shots is the "and 1"? If it's the third, then we line up for a foul-shot rebound. If it's the first, then A gets the ensuing throw-in. If it's the middle free throw-in, I'd like to be in the stands to witness it! :D
