Thoughts?

This may have been discussed previously, but here goes. I was at a conference championship game last night and it was a barn burner. A two on one fast break with a huge size advantage and team's D1 recruit leading the break, suddenly with dribbler near free throw line, a whistle from new trail with a foul on defense in the backcourt which I did not see. This penalized the offense they were not in the bonus and ball was inbounded in back court.

I'm guessing the foul was egregious enough that the official felt it needed to be called, and let's assume for argument's sake it wasn't intentional. What would you do in this instance?

Having 20-20 hindsight going for me, I'd wait until the play finished and blow whistle. This would bring a cry probably from both coaches. I'd explain to both that I wasn't killing the play on the break and the foul needed to be called. Haven't gone to case book on this one, thought it would good to discuss.
Another thought(without seeing the foul) would be to pass and if offended coach complained, explain you didn't want to take away his advantage on the break.

What say the wise elders here?

If it's egregiouos enouogh to be called in the BC when the team has a 2-1 break in the FC, then it's likely to be intentional.

If it's not intentional, then it's not likely to rise to the level of a foul.

+1

Unless some kind of advantage was gained, then it's incidental contact. And if an advantage is gained, it meets the rules criteria of an intentional foul-"neutralizes an opponent's obvious advantageous position".
