Punching the ball

Freshmen girls. Team A in bounds the ball in their backcourt. There is not a defender within 30 feet of the play. A1 bounces the ball to A2. A2 punches the ball back to A1. NO! I did not call the violation. The next dead ball I informed A2 not to punch the ball again. Nothing good would have come out if I called the violation for Punching the Ball.:)

I actually called this violation in a boys varsity game a few years ago. My interpreter suggested that I not make that call again unless the ball is punched out of a crowd. His interpretation is that this violation is in the books as a safety issue.

I've made the call twice, both last year. First one was during a rebound, A1 wound up and delivered a nice right hook that connected square with ball. First time I had ever called it, and it took me a half a second to realize what I had. Second time, ball was knocked loose, and the defender, trying to knock the ball forward for a fast break, hit the ball with a fist. Second time, I was all over it.

If so, your sarcasm wasn't quite obvious enough. :)

No, you make the call, then when the coach complains, you punch him.

If A2 had caught the ball, traveled, and then passed it back to A1 would you have called that?

How about if A1 had stepped over the line prior to making the throw-in pass?

If A2 then went down and stood with her heel barely touching the free throw line for 3 seconds, would you call that?
