Girl's HS last night. I'm a fan of the refs.

Team B fumbles a pass in their deep front court.
Quicker A12 gets to the ball at the end line with both of her feet 4" from and pointing toward the end line.
B6 immediately is on A12 and closely guarding with hands up.
(so we have B6 parallel to A12 parallel to end line)
Because of the nearness of the end line and B6, A12 cannot dribble or pivot (in a panic she does not think of requesting time).
B6 now moves 2" closer to where her chest is slightly pressuring (in contact with) A12, causing A12 to move a foot onto the end line.

What's your call? Push or B ball?

Gotta see it Mick but...

A) sounds like there was a bit of displacement b) possible verticality issues. I probably would have the foul, unless A just freaked because B was too close to her.

I'd have a technical foul for team A having twelve players on the court! :D

I edited the unnecessary words out of your description. Foul.

PA Coach,
...But, I was trying to paint a clear picture. ;)

If the "slight pressure" by B6 causes A12 to move feet to maintain balance, it is a poor defensive play by B6. You said the pressure caused A12 to move feet. Although it is cheap, it is a foul on B6. Sometimes defensive mental mistakes will rescue an offensive player from an awkward situation.

Classic example of advantage/disadvantage.

Because of A12s position on the court, the contact, however slight, by B6 caused A12 to step out of bounds giving an advantage to B. Foul.

Had this happened in the middle of the court somewhere and A12 has room to pivot legally without stepping out of bounds, it's probably a no-call.

Is a word picture worth a thousand words? Only if MTDNS is the artist! :D

I want to know why you got to watch a whole game and only have that one sitch to share! I'm two-and-a-half months from our first practice, and I have to go to field hockey games and tennis matches to get my fix of HS sports.

(Edited to include smilie!)

I've had this happen and called the foul based upon displacement. If the defensive player moves forward, makes contact, and the offensive player has to move a foot onto the line to maintain balance, it seems like an easy call.

I agree with the majority, unless the coaches are both over 50. Then I think it should be a "forced out".

Jewel,
I'll bite.
Why would that matter?

...And what if the refs and coaches are over 50?

Because they'll probably actually remember the "force out" rule, and they won't argue when you call it. Just give it back to the kid who had the ball and play on.

Chuck, you're just a sweet young thing. Why do you remember this?!

I played organized basketball for the first time ever when I was 13, in 8th grade. I had absolutely no idea about the rules or how to play or anything. The first time I ever got into a game was with 3 seconds left and the outcome decided. Coach figured I couldn't do much damage, I guess. But later that season, I got into a game and actually had to play defense. I was guarding the dribbler right in front of my own bench (in the backcourt). He tried to go by me and I moved to cut him off. We bumped and he fell OOB. I got called for the block, obviously, but I was oblivious as to what had just transpired. Coach just patted me on the butt and said, "That's ok. A few years ago, that would've just been a force out. Get back out there."

I have no idea why, but that has stuck with me forever. I think I remember a lot about that season, b/c everything was a first for me. Anyway, that's why I remember the force out. :)

In our first varsity game my first year as head coach, we were in a varsity-only tournament (no JV game), one of my top players was playing with two fouls late in the first half and another forward was already sitting with three. There was a shooting foul called with :00.5 left in the half, so I took out the player with two fouls to protect her, and put in a freshman who was a JV player but I had her dressed for the game. About a month later, she had improved enough to where I dressed her for the varsity even when we had JV games and late in a blowout she got her second varsity action, playing the last 3 or 4 minutes. After the game she playfully thanked me for letting her play more than a half a second!
