NCAA M Fastbreak Mechanic

Watching Indiana-Northwestern.

Indiana gets a steal and starts on the fast break. Ed Hightower is the C, not sure who the T is. On the play, Hightower and the T both pull up at free throw line extended. The guy shooting a layup gets mauled, but there was no call.

Is this SOP for a fastbreak, or should there have been better coverage?

It looked like Hightower would have had the better angle regardless of whether or not the new L had gotten into position, but he still didn't make a call.

I'm sure it was just great, stifling defense by the wildcats. [/fanboy]

I assume you mean that Hightower/Partner were the C/T when Northwestern had the ball before IU went on the fast break.

If you can't beat the fast-break play down the floor and you're the new L, then yes, I'd pull up somewhere around the FT line extended. It sucks when you hustle down the floor, only to be caught in "no-man's land" (can't make it all the way to the baseline) and you end up getting screened on the contact.
