Sixth grade girl tossed from rec game!
 

This was in what's called around here a "competitive" league, as opposed to straight recreational programs. The "competitive" leagues take the place of MS basketball, since most of the MS schools in my area do not have sports programs.

Middle of Q2, A1 is dribbling along the sideline when she bounces the ball on the line. Partner calls OOB. Girls turns and says, loudly, "Are you blind?" At first, partner was somewhat stunned, then calls the T. Before he can even report it, girl shouts at him "GO TO HE11"! Both partner and I are somewhat stunned. He then calls second T and she's gone. Coach has to pull her over to the bench. While my partner is reporting all this, the girl's dad comes out of the bleachers, picks up her bag, grabs her arm and pulls her off the court and out of the building. I took that as a good thing, since he looked like he was really upset with her and was preparing to give her a lecture.

I gotta tell ya', this happened two days ago and I'm still thinking about it.

You're not alone. I had a sixth grade girls game this week. My partner and I were dismayed at the behavior at this grade level. We both gave warnings, I called an intentional and we were both close to using T's for that which God intended.

Too bad, the poor behavior just keeps moving to lower grade levels.

While it is easy for us (and others) to make comments about poor behavior "moving" to lower levels, allow me to give an example that shows that perhaps history is repeating itself as much as anything else.

When I was in 6th grade (I won't give the year, I will only say that Don McLean had the #1 hit that year), there were two teams in our league that were known for having "bad boys." At that time, players were required to raise their hand (ONLY one hand) and lower it (within slamming it down) when a foul was called on them. Players were ejected when they received two technical fouls.

During many of our games, SEVERAL players on the opposing teams were ejected during that season.

As a collective lot, today's players may be a bit more bold than those of decades back, but I don't see the trend as being as negative as others do.

One thing that hasn't changed is that it is still disappointing to hear stories such as the one Mark has relayed to us. The positive that we can take from the story is the parent's reaction. I will say that in the case of the two teams back in my playing era, the parents would frequently be cheering the players' actions.

I sure hope a lecture is all that was meted out. And I am sure the father has been given those same instructions at some point in time.

Personally, my dad only called a "time out" when he was coaching. Otherwise, lectures were usually short and frequently ended with something other than words. But, that was long before we "learned" how wrong that approach was.:rolleyes:

And by lecture you mean a discussion with a paadle or a belt!

3rd & 4th Grade Ejection
 

Some members at Bible Study this evening told me (rather they asked me about) their 3 & 4 grade tourney this morning. Apparently their star player was ejected in the semifinals for a flagrant technical foul (as the story was relayed to me, she was elbowed in the eye and then during the following dead ball shoved the other girl to the floor.) The coach lobbyed for a regular technical foul and received a regular direct himself. Less than 2 minutes later ejected girl on the bench apparently made a sarcastic comment about the refs' rules knowledge which earned the coach an indirect T for bench misconduct, and the girl was ordered out of the gym with adult escort, so the assistant coach left. At halftime while the girls were warming up a ball got away and one of the girls was running after it when the ref grabbed it and threw it away from her. She said, "Thanks, jerk." and got ejected. The refs applied the indirect tech to the hc and tossed him as well. There being no further adult coaches the refs forfeited the game at halftime.

When asked about this my first-gut reaction, was to recognize that a lot of these 3 &4 grade tourneys are refed by high school players and parents with no knowledge.

Yet what I told them was, its sounds like a bunch of girls need to fix their attitudes before their next game.

He needed neither. :)

Despite you mentioning a lot of these games are reffed by players and parents with no knowledge, it sounds like this was handled by rule pretty accurately.

Other than applying the indirect to the coach on the player T, looks like they got it right.

Somehow, I'm doubting the ref threw the ball away from her, and I have no problem DQing a 4th grader for calling the ref a jerk.

I'd be pretty upset as a parent if my 9 year old behaved this way.

As I read the story, the girl was warming p at halftime. She is, therefore, bench personnel and the indirect T is indeed then applied to the HC
