Walk, jump ball or neither?

Wreck game today...

Shooter goes up for a layup with both hands on the ball. The ball gets touched by a defense, and knocked loose (kinda) and the shooter, on his way back to the floor, catches the ball. I didn't call a walk or jumpball, but the program director, who was an official long time ago and who's wife still officiates, told me he thought that should have been a jump-ball, similar to if a player goes up for a shot and a defense gets his/her hand on the ball and doesn't knock it loose.

Sorry, may not be the best description...

Nope, those people are wrong. The release was not prevented as the ball came loose. That's why you should buy a rules book instead of listening to these wreck league warriors.

That's what I thought. I was explaining it to the program director that what happened is similar as if the ball was above the head for a jumpshot, get's blocked and the player catches the ball. Ball wasn't really released yet by the shooter for the shot, but it was just knocked loose enough IMO to be considered a loose ball.

rule HELD BALL 4-25-2 says An opponent places his/her hand(s) on the ball and prevents an airborne player from throwing the ball or releasing it on a try.

Nevada are you sure on this one?

I agree with you if the ball hit the floor first or if it was out of his hand and then hit by the defence. But if the defense hits the ball and the offensive player then lets go it has to hit the ground first no?

There is no rules support for your position.

If the touching did not prevent a pass or try and the offensive player then lets it go, recovers it again while still airborne and lands holding the ball, it's traveling. Case book play 4.44.3SitA(c).

If the touching did not prevent a pass or try and the offensive player then lets it go and is is the first to touch the ball after it hits the floor it's a traveling violation for starting a dribble with the pivot foot off the floor. Case book play 4.44.3.SitA(d).

Similar Situations ...

From recently revised version of "Most Misunderstood Rules": When an airborne player keeps control of an attempted shot that is blocked and is unable to release the ball and returns to the floor with it, that player has not traveled; it is a held ball. If, in this situation, the shooter loses control of the ball because of the block, then this is simply a blocked shot and play continues. If, in this situation, the defender simply touches the ball, and the airborne shooter returns to the floor holding the ball, it’s a traveling violation. When an airborne player tries for goal, sees that the try will be blocked, purposely drops the ball, and picks up the ball after it hits the floor, that player has traveled by starting a dribble with the pivot foot off the floor.

I had a question for the Forum about a similar play a few weeks ago and received a lot of help: http://forum.officiating.com/basketb...one-today.html

As others have implied, the answer hinges on a better decription (iow, you need to better judge) this action.
