Read it - can't find it
Partner asked me about a call I made last night - A had LGP on the baseline - B let go of the ball - ran out of bounds to avoid defender, came back in to dribble - I call a OOB violation.
Anyone know where I might find the wording? |
NFHS rule 9-3-3
|
9-3-3...A player shall not leave the floor for an unauthorized reason.
|
I called this for the first time this year. A1 was trapped near the sideline in his FC. He looks around the defender towards the endline and throws the ball that direction. He then goes OOB to go around the defender, reestablishes himself in bounds and continues the dribble. Just as I hit my whistle. He probably thinks I missed the call because the whistle was a bit late.

Not to hijack the thread, but what about this situation that I had during a scrimmage this year:
A1 is near the sideline and B1 has set up in LGP in front of him. A1 passes the ball and, to avoid a collision, runs around B1 out of bounds (their momentum was carrying them in that direction) then back onto the court. Same call (i.e., violation under 9-3-3)? |
Perfect -thanks guys!
SECTION 3 OUT OF BOUNDS
ART. 1 . . . A player shall not cause the ball to go out of bounds. NOTE: The dribbler has committed a violation if he/she steps on or outside a boundary, even though he/she is not touching the ball while he/she is out of bounds. ART. 2 . . . No player shall be out of bounds when he/she touches or is touched by the ball after it has been released on a throw-in pass. ART. 3 . . . A player shall not leave the floor for an unauthorized reason. PENALTY: (Section 3) The ball is dead when the violation occurs and is awarded to the opponents for a throw-in from the designated out-of-bounds spot nearest the violation. (See 6-7-9 Exception d) |
Judgment, IMO. If he went out on purpose, violation. If his momentum truly carried him that far, nothing. The way I read it, he did it on purpose to avoid the defender. I'd say it has to be pretty obvious that he did it intentinally, though.
