Drawing a Lane Violation
NCAA rules.
A player is fouled and awarded free throws. The player has a weird, herky-jerky free throw stroke, with lots of twitches, starts, and stops. (Somehow, he still makes around 65% for the year.) Early in the game, there is very little delay in his FT motion, but as the game goes on, he slows down -- so much so that opposing players are frequently drawn into the lane before the shot is released. (This year, opponents have been called for 23 lane violations on his free throws in 22 games.) I found a FIBA rule that prohibits faking a free throw in an attempt to draw the defense into the key early. Is there a similar rule in the NCAA? Thanks. |
From the current NCAA rules book:
RULE 9 Violations and Penalties Section 1. Free Throw Art. 1. The try shall be attempted from within the free-throw semicircle and behind the free-throw line. Art. 2. After the ball is placed at the disposal of a free-thrower: a. The free-thrower shall release the try within 10 seconds and in such a way that the ball enters the basket or touches the ring or flange before the free throw ends. b. The free-thrower shall not purposely fake a try nor shall the freethrower’s teammates nor opponents purposely fake a violation. |
You'll find that all codes prohibit the faking of a free throw to draw a lane violation.
