Coaches Question
 

Had this happen over the weekend, neutral court, inexperienced person running the clock.

1st half, throw in under the basket, Trail was in front of our bench. Both teams were lining up, I sent a substitute to the table. There was no buzzer, so i said sub as i would think most coaches do. The official looks and blows his whistle. In that time, the other official game the ball to the player to be thrown in. After the kids stop he says, "Play on, I already gave him the ball" and well we proceed to give up an easy shot. Just wondering if you all think the play should have been stopped and restarted because of the whistle. Thanks

If the official hit his whistle, the play would have been killed. Let the sub in and then resume with the throw-in.

Well thats what I was thinking, but not much we could do.

I agree with tjones. I normally hate when coaches yell "sub," but this seems a bit different, as they normally say it as the kid is heading to the table and not after he gets there.

If one official kills the play, though, it's dead. Let the sub in and move on.

Was the sub running to the table when you yell? or Was the sub already at the table?

Personally, I look to if the sub is at the table when I hear someone yell sub, and if they are not already there, then they will have to wait until the next dead ball.

he was there..he had been there before the ball went out of bounds. We were down anyway, it was late in the half and I was trying to get a kid in that does not play alot of minutes anyway.

This was the least of my worries, I can assure you..Losing to a much inferior team is much worse.

To be clear, while the play should have been dead on the whistle, the subsequent throw-in is not a "re-do." (ie. Time should not be reset) not sure if that's what you mean by "restart"....

I actually had this happen over the weekend too...but we handled it correctly. :)

...a little too over officious IMHO.;)

What would you recommend saying that would be just officious enough? :rolleyes:

Pesonally, I won't rush a throw-in just because the coach yells "sub," but I'm not going to slow it down either. And if I'm handing it to the player, we're playing on and the sub can wait, regardless of whether the horn sounds.

1) If the thrower is ready and you're in the act of handing the ball to him, ignore the substitution request if the sub isn't at the table..
2) If you're not in the act of handing the ball to him, wait until the sub hits the X and then bring him in.

Of course, if a whistle is blown, you now have no reason by rule not to allow the substitution.

That's just about the right officiousness imo.

It doesn't bother me a bit. If a coach tells me a sub is on the way to the table and he/she is, I wait an extra 2 seconds and bring the sub in. I do it for both teams and I can't remember anyone ever complaining about it.
